Chapter 9 - The Dead Man’s SwitchThe burner phone on the floor, forgotten in the chaos, suddenly flashed a blinding neon blue.

BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.
Marcus froze, his hand halfway through dragging David toward the door. Every surviving security guard snapped their weapons toward the small device glowing on the linoleum.
David let out a sudden, hysterical laugh, spitting blood onto the floor. “You thought you won, Vance! You arrogant bastard, you walked right into the trap!”
Jonathan Vance stopped dead in his tracks just outside the glass doors. He slowly turned around, his sharp eyes narrowing as he stared through the rain-streaked window at the blinking phone.
On the screen, a countdown timer appeared in bold, unyielding red numbers:
00:03:59 00:03:58
“What is that?” Marcus barked, kicking the phone away from his boot.
“It’s a dead man’s switch,” David laughed maniacally, his face bruised and bloody against the tile. “Every thirty minutes, that phone has to receive a manual security ping from my private offshore server. If it doesn't—if I’m arrested, if I’m killed, or if my wife dies—an encrypted package containing every single wire transfer, every offshore bribe, and every illegal shell corporation you used to frame me goes straight to the Department of Justice, the SEC, and every major news outlet in the world.”
Vance’s face went completely bloodless. For the first time all day, the billionaire lost his composure. He strode back through the glass door, grabbing David by the collar of his trench coat and hauling him off the floor with terrifying strength.
“Where is the override code?!” Vance roared, his voice shaking with a rage that terrified even his own men.
David smiled, blood staining his teeth. “You should have saved my wife, Jonathan. You had the power to keep her alive. Now? The timer hits zero, and your entire empire burns to ash with her.”
On the floor, Sarah’s eyes fluttered open one last time. Her breathing was painfully weak, but her hand twitched, reaching out blindly for her daughter.
“Emma...” Sarah whispered.
