Chapter 5 - THE PHANTOM DIRECTOR

The revelation sent shockwaves through the room. Leo stared at the legal documents, his young mind trying to process the magnitude of what he was hearing. He had spent the last three years digging through trash cans for food, sleeping under highway overpasses, and stitching his shoes with black tape—and all along, he was the heir to a multi-million-dollar medical empire.
"This... this can't be real," Leo stammered, backing away from the table. "My mom and I... we didn't want money! We just wanted to stop Victoria!"
"It is real, son," Arthur Pendelton said gently. "Your father’s original patents for neural-regeneration therapies are the exact technology Victoria used to build her fortune. She kept your mother locked away in that lab not just to keep her quiet about Emma—but to keep her from ever claiming your father’s estate!"
Before anyone could say another word, James’s encrypted phone buzzed violently on the table.
James answered it, placing it on speaker. "Marcus, what is it? I told you I didn't want to be disturbed."
"Sir, we have a major security breach at the central holding facility!" Marcus’s voice crackled through the speaker, frantic and breathless over static. "Victoria Langford... she's gone!"
James stood up so fast his chair topped backward, clattering against the floor. "WHAT?! She was in a maximum-security federal facility!"
"It was an inside job, Mr. Caldwell!" Marcus yelled. "A transport vehicle was ambushed fifteen minutes ago during her transfer to the state penitentiary. Two guards were neutralized with localized nerve gas. A helicopter picked her up from the highway overpass!"
Emma gasped, holding onto Leo’s arm.
"Who broke her out?" James roared into the phone. "Who has that kind of firepower?!"
"We checked the security footage from the transport vehicle," Marcus replied, his voice trembling. "The armored strike team... they weren't mercenaries, sir. They were carrying tactical gear bearing the insignia of Aegis Global Medical."
Elena’s face drained of all color. She gripped the edge of her seat, her breath hitching. "Aegis Global..."
James turned to her instantly. "You know that name?"
"It was... it was David’s old parent company," Elena whispered, her eyes wide with terror. "The company he worked for before he died. Victoria didn't steal the patents alone, James. She had a partner. A silent partner who ran the international distribution."
"Who?" James demanded.
Elena looked up, tears of pure horror swimming in her dark eyes. "David’s former chief investor... a man named Julian Thorne."
Arthur Pendelton dropped his pen. "Julian Thorne? The defense contractor? He’s one of the most powerful men in Northern Europe! If Thorne is involved, this isn't just corporate fraud anymore. This is a private military network."
Suddenly, the high-tech smart displays mounted throughout the atrium flickered simultaneously. The bright blue home screens dissolved into static before cutting to a live, crisp video feed.
A man sat in a high-backed leather chair against a floor-to-ceiling glass wall overlooking a darkened city skyline. He looked to be in his late fifties, with silver hair cut in military precision, wearing a bespoke charcoal suit. Beside him, standing with a bandage over her forehead but an evil smirk on her face, was Victoria Langford.
"Good evening, James," the man in the suit said, his voice deep, smooth, and chillingly refined. "And hello to my late partner's family. Elena... little Leo. You've caused quite a disruption to our global operations."
"Thorne," James spat, stepping in front of the children. "If you touch my family, I will use every dollar I own to hunt you down to the end of the earth."
Julian Thorne chuckled softly, swirling a glass of amber liquid in his hand. "Oh, James. Always so dramatic. I don't care about your money. I care about completion."
Thorne leaned forward, his icy blue eyes staring directly through the camera lens.
"Victoria was sloppy. She let her greed get in the way of science. But the neural-regeneration formula that little Emma is currently benefiting from? That formula is incomplete without the final biological key—a key that exists only in the bloodline of David Reyes."
Thorne pointed his finger directly at Leo.
"You have twenty-four hours, James. Bring the boy to the old industrial shipyard at Pier 42. If you involve the police, or if you attempt to hide him, I will detonate the micro-stabilizer implanted in Emma’s neural spinal shunt. You didn't think Victoria installed that mobility frame without a kill-switch, did you?"
Emma froze, her hand flying to the base of her neck, where a small, barely perceptible surgical scar sat from her operation four years ago.
"You monster!" James roared.
May you like
"24 hours, Caldwell," Thorne said calmly. "The boy's life... for your daughter's."
The screen snapped to black.
