CHAPTER 3 — The Sister Who Was Never Lost

Nobody breathed.

Eleanor's hands shook violently.

"I wasn't protecting the family."

"I was protecting myself."

Richard stared at his wife in disbelief.

"What are you saying?"

She opened the envelope.

Inside were dozens of letters.

Every single one addressed to Richard.

Every single one...

Never delivered.

Amelia recognized the handwriting instantly.

"I wrote those..."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I wrote hundreds."

Eleanor nodded.

"I know."

"I burned most of them."

The room erupted.

Claire covered her mouth.

Michael whispered,

"My God..."

Eleanor collapsed into a chair.

"The day Amelia disappeared..."

"She wasn't kidnapped."

Richard looked frozen.

"What?"

Eleanor buried her face in her hands.

"I found her."

Everyone stared.

"She had wandered onto a bus after getting separated from us."

"I found her before the police did."

Amelia's body went completely still.

Eleanor continued crying.

"But..."

"...I had just learned Richard planned to leave me."

"He wanted custody of all three children."

"I convinced myself..."

"...if Amelia disappeared..."

"...he would stay."

Richard looked physically ill.

"No..."

"You told me you searched for weeks."

"I lied."

Eleanor nodded.

"I left Amelia with a childless couple who had lost their own daughter."

"They promised to raise her."

"I told them she had no family."

The ballroom exploded into screams.

Claire collapsed onto the floor.

Michael punched the dining table so hard the crystal shattered.

Richard whispered,

"You stole our daughter..."

"For twenty-five years."

Amelia slowly walked toward Eleanor.

Everyone expected anger.

Hatred.

Revenge.

Instead...

She placed one hand on Eleanor's shoulder.

"I already forgave you."

The room fell silent.

"But..."

She reached into her backpack one last time.

And pulled out a sealed envelope.

"The people who raised me died last month."

"They left me something."

She handed it to Richard.

Inside...

Was the final adoption record.

Richard's eyes widened.

Then he began sobbing.

Because the document revealed one final truth.

Amelia had never been an only lost child.

She had been raising another little girl all these years.

A girl abandoned at the same orphanage.

A girl Amelia had legally adopted as her own daughter.

Richard looked up in confusion.

Amelia smiled through tears.

"You spent twenty-five years mourning one daughter."

"Now..."

"...you have a granddaughter waiting outside."

The mansion doors slowly opened.

A shy twelve-year-old girl stepped inside holding the same one-eyed teddy bear.

For the first time in twenty-five years...

The Whitmore family wasn't being torn apart by the past.

They were being given one final chance to become a real family again.

But not because a lost sister came home...

Because she brought forgiveness that no amount of money could ever buy.
