Chapter 6 - The Siege of the North Shore

The rain hammered against the reinforced glass of the Ashford estate with the fury of a hurricane. Inside, the grand mansion was shrouded in an eerie, unnatural quiet. All the interior lights had been dimmed to a low, amber glow, turning the sprawling hallways into a labyrinth of shadows and tactical advantage.

Isla sat at the kitchen island, nursing a cup of chamomile tea while Mrs. Gable stood silently by the counter, cleaning a silver spoon with mechanical precision.

“Try to drink it, child,” Mrs. Gable said without looking up. “When the storm hits like this, the rats always try to scurry out of the sewers.”

Before Isla could ask what she meant, the mansion’s master alarm system didn’t just ring—it shrieked.

A piercing, high-pitched wail echoed through every corridor, accompanied by the harsh flashing of red emergency strobes along the baseboards.

Mrs. Gable dropped the spoon. It clattered sharply against the marble. Without a single word of panic, the housekeeper reached beneath the counter, pulled out a sleek, suppressed submachine gun with terrifying familiarity, and locked the steel security shutters over the kitchen windows with a heavy hydraulic hiss.

“Stay right here under the island,” Mrs. Gable commanded, her voice dropping into the tone of a seasoned military veteran. “Do not move.”

“What’s happening?” Isla’s voice trembled, the tea spilling over the edge of her mug.

“The Iron Vipers,” Mrs. Gable replied calmly, clicking the safety off her weapon. “They’ve breached the outer gates.”

Panic surged through Isla’s veins like liquid fire. She thought of Marco. Marco! The guest cottage was fifty yards away across the open courtyard.

“Marco,” Isla gasped, scrambling off the stool. “My brother is in the guest cottage—”

“Miss Monroe, stay down!” Mrs. Gable shouted, but Isla was already moving.

Adrenaline overrode all logic. She bolted out of the kitchen and into the grand hallway. The red emergency strobes painted the marble floors in streaks of blood-red light. Outside, the sounds of war echoed through the stormy night—the sharp, distinct crack-crack of automatic gunfire, the shattering of reinforced glass, and the deep, concussive thud of flashbang grenades shaking the foundation of the estate.

Isla sprinted toward the main entrance, her sneakers slipping on the slick marble. As she reached the foyer, the massive oak front doors splintered inward with a deafening crash.

Three men in tactical black gear, their faces hidden behind dark balaclavas and night-vision goggles, swarmed through the shattered doorway. Automatic rifles raised, scanning the room.

One of them spotted Isla frozen near the grand staircase.

“Target spotted! The nurse!” the lead intruder barked into his shoulder radio. “Secure her alive. Boss’s orders!”

The gunman lunged forward, grabbing Isla by the arm with a brutal, bruising grip. She screamed, thrashing against him, clawing at his tactical vest with her fingernails, but her strength was nothing against his armored frame.

“Let me go! Get away from me!” she shrieked.

“Shut up, bitch—”

Before the gunman could finish his sentence, a dark, lethal blur dropped silently from the high vaulted ceiling directly above the staircase.

It was Dominic Ashford.

He didn't look like a recovering trauma patient with fresh surgical sutures. He looked like an angel of death. Falling from above, Dominic slammed both feet directly into the chest of the intruder holding Isla, sending the man flying backward across the marble floor with a sickening crunch of broken ribs.

Before the other two gunmen could swivel their rifles, Dominic hit the ground rolling, drawing a custom matte-black Sig Sauer pistol from his shoulder holster with blinding speed.

Bang. Bang.

Two precise, deafening shots echoed through the grand foyer. Both intruders dropped instantly, their weapons clattering against the marble floor.

The smoke from the gunfire drifted upward into the red strobe lights.

Dominic stood over the fallen bodies, breathing heavily, his dark eyes wide and wild with lethal adrenaline. A fresh stain of crimson was rapidly spreading across the white bandage beneath his black button-down shirt where his stitches had torn open from the impact.

He didn't care. He turned instantly toward Isla.

“Are you hurt?” he demanded, his voice a harsh, desperate growl as he grabbed her shoulders and pulled her against his chest, checking her over with frantic urgency.

Isla stared up at him, her chest heaving, tears streaming down her face. She looked past his shoulder at the fallen men, then back up at the terrifying, bleeding man who had just thrown himself into the line of fire to save her.

“My brother,” she choked out, her voice breaking. “Marco... the guest cottage—”

“Carter is already there. Marco is secure,” Dominic promised, his hands cupping her face, his thumb gently wiping away a streak of dirt and tears from her cheek. “I told you, Isla. No one touches you. No one.”

Before Isla could answer, the heavy double doors at the back of the foyer burst open, and Carter rushed in followed by a half-dozen armed guards, securing the perimeter. But as Isla looked into Dominic’s dark, unwavering eyes amidst the chaos of blood and smoke, she knew the terrifying truth:

The Phantom King had built a fortress to protect her, but she had just become the very center of his soul.
