Chapter 3 - THE WOLF'S SANCTUARY SHATTERED: When Your Own Guard Dogs Turn Into Executioners

Back at the Moretti estate, Alessandro sat in his dark study. The only light came from the fireplace, casting flickering shadows across the leather-bound books and the heavy mahogany desk.
On the desk lay the tin of Italian herbal tea Dr. Bennett had taken from Sophia’s kitchen. Next to it was a laboratory report. Bennett had run a rapid toxin screen at his private lab. The results were clear: high concentrations of atropine and scopolamine.
Sophia was indeed being poisoned.
Alessandro stared at the report. His mind was a storm of calculations. Who had access?
Only four people had the security codes to his private quarters and the pantry: himself, his head of security Frank, his personal chef, and... Vincenzo.
A soft knock on the door broke his train of thought.
“Come in,” Alessandro said, his hand sliding over the paper, covering the lab results.
The door opened, and Sophia walked in. She was pale, but her fever had broken slightly thanks to the fluids and medication Dr. Bennett had administered secretly. She was wearing a borrowed thick wool sweater that was much too big for her. Behind her, Emma clung to her skirt, holding a small plush bear.
“Mr. Moretti,” Sophia said, her voice trembling. “The doctor said I need to rest, but... I cannot stay here. I saw the look on your face earlier. I saw the doctor’s face. Something is wrong, isn't it? Please, tell me the truth. Am I... am I going to die?”
Alessandro looked at her. For three years, he had treated this woman like part of the furniture. He had ignored her quiet grace, her tireless work, the way she made his cold, empty house feel slightly warmer. He had ignored the child who played in the dirt, pretending her plastic shovel was a magic wand.
He got up from his desk and walked over to her. He didn't stop until he was standing just inches away.
“No,” Alessandro said, his voice firm, carrying the absolute weight of his authority. “You are not going to die. I will protect you.”
“Why would someone want to hurt me?” Sophia’s eyes welled with tears. “I am nobody. I just clean the floors. I just want to raise my daughter.”
Alessandro reached out, his large, scarred hand gently lifting her chin so she had to look him in the eye. “Sophia. Who are you really?”
Sophia froze. The color drained completely from her face. She tried to look away, but his grip, though gentle, was unyielding.
“I don't know what you mean,” she whispered.
“The tea you drink,” Alessandro said. “It was poisoned with belladonna. It’s a very specific poison. It’s a signature of the Valenti family. They used it ten years ago to eliminate the Marcone leadership. I know the chemistry, Sophia. And I know you didn't just appear out of thin air three years ago with a clean social security number and no family history. Who are you?”
Sophia let out a ragged sob. She fell to her knees, hiding her face in her hands. Emma immediately let go of her skirt and wrapped her tiny arms around her mother’s neck, glaring at Alessandro with fierce, protective anger.
“Don't hurt my mama!” Emma cried out.
Alessandro felt a sharp pang in his chest. He knelt down beside them, bringing himself to their level.
“I am not going to hurt her, Emma,” Alessandro said, his voice softer than any of his men had ever heard. “I want to keep her safe. But I need the truth.”
Sophia looked up, her eyes red and desperate. “My name is Sophia Valenti. Silvio Valenti was my father. He was a monster, Mr. Moretti. He wanted to marry me off to Vincenzo to seal an alliance between your families. But I found out what they were planning. I found out Vincenzo was the one who set up your brother Michael’s ambush eleven years ago.”
The air in the room turned to ice.
Alessandro’s breath caught in his throat. “What did you say?”
“Vincenzo,” Sophia whispered, tears streaming down her cheeks. “He leaked Michael’s route to my father’s hitmen. He wanted Michael out of the way so he could become your underboss, your heir. I found the ledger—the records of the payouts, the offshore accounts, the communications. I took the ledger, I grabbed my baby, and I ran. I thought if I hid in your house, in the Wolf’s lair, Vincenzo would never dare to look for me here. I thought it was the safest place in the world.”
Alessandro stood up slowly. His mind was screaming.
Michael. His sweet, laughing younger brother, who had wanted to be an artist, not a mobster. Michael, who had been torn apart by machine-gun fire in his own car.
And Vincenzo, the man who had held Alessandro while he wept at the funeral, the man who had sworn to find the killers... was the one who had sold him out.
Suddenly, the lights in the mansion flickered and died.
The room was plunged into pitch blackness.
A second later, the red emergency backup lights kicked in, bathing the study in a bloody, ominous glow.

From downstairs, the muffled, sharp pop-pop-pop of silenced gunfire echoed through the vents.
The siege had begun.
