Chapter 6 - THE WOLF DOESN'T BLEED ALONE: The Final Twist That Shocked the Underworld

CRACK!

The heavy box shattered Vincenzo’s nose, sending him stumbling backward, blood spraying from his face.

In the same second, Alessandro pulled the revolver from his boot.

Bang!

The bullet took the enforcer holding Emma directly in the forehead. The man dropped like a stone, releasing the child.

“Emma, run!” Sophia screamed, diving to the ground as the remaining gunman opened fire.

The garden turned into a war zone.

Alessandro, fueled by pure adrenaline and the primal instinct to protect, rolled to his side and fired two more shots. The gunman who had been holding him was hit in the throat, collapsing onto the rose bushes, his blood staining the white petals a deep, violent crimson.

But Vincenzo was already back on his feet, his face covered in blood, his eyes wild with demonic fury. He raised his gun, aiming directly at Sophia, who was crawling toward Emma.

“You b*tch!” Vincenzo screamed.

Alessandro had no bullets left. His revolver was empty.

Without hesitation, he threw his heavy body over Sophia, shielding her with his own back.

Bang!

The shot echoed through the garden.

But Alessandro didn't feel any pain.

He opened his eyes.

Vincenzo was standing frozen, his gun raised, but there was a neat, small red hole directly in the center of his chest. His eyes were wide with shock, looking past Alessandro toward the tree line.

Vincenzo’s gun slipped from his fingers, clattering onto the gravel. He fell to his knees, then forward into the very dirt Sophia had just dug up.

Alessandro turned his head slowly.

Standing at the edge of the garden, holding a smoking sniper rifle, was Dr. Charles Bennett.

Behind him stood twenty heavily armed men, wearing the tactical gear of the Moretti family’s elite guard.

“You’re late, Charles,” Alessandro gasped, his voice cracking as the adrenaline began to fade, the pain of his wounds returning with a vengeance.

“My apologies, Don Alessandro,” Dr. Bennett said, lowering the rifle and running toward them. “It took some time to round up the loyalists and eliminate Vincenzo’s plants at the front gate. Are you alright?”

Alessandro didn't answer. He looked down at Sophia, who was still cradled beneath him. She was breathing heavily, her eyes wide with terror, but she was alive.

Emma scrambled over, throwing her small arms around both of them, sobbing into Alessandro’s bloody coat.

“We’re okay,” Sophia whispered, her hand finding Alessandro’s. Her grip was warm, strong, and real. “We’re okay.”

EPILOGUE: THE NEW DAWNTwo weeks later, the New Jersey pine barrens were quiet.

The three graves that Vincenzo had dug were no longer empty.

Two of them had been filled with the bodies of the traitors who had tried to take the Moretti empire.

The third grave—the smallest one—had been filled back in with dirt and covered with a beautiful, thick patch of wild white roses.

Alessandro stood at the edge of the garden of his estate. His shoulder was in a sling, and a thick bandage was wrapped around his torso, but he stood tall, his posture commanding. The Wolf of the East River was still alive, and his grip on the city was tighter than ever.

But the mansion was no longer empty.

From the kitchen, the sweet smell of fresh baking bread drifted through the open windows. The sound of a child’s laughter echoed through the hallways.

Sophia walked out onto the porch, wearing a beautiful green dress. She was no longer wearing the maid’s uniform. She was no longer hiding. The Valenti ledger had been destroyed, the secrets buried forever, and her father’s former empire had been absorbed into Alessandro’s, making her the safest woman in the country.

Emma ran out onto the grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Alessandro had bought her the day they returned from the hospital.

“Mr. Moretti!” Emma called out, her cheeks rosy and healthy. “Look! Barnaby found a stick!”

Alessandro’s stern face softened into a genuine, warm smile—the kind of smile he hadn't shared with anyone since he was eleven years old.

“I see it, Emma,” Alessandro called back. He looked at Sophia as she walked down the steps to join him.

“You don't have to call him Mr. Moretti anymore, sweetheart,” Sophia said, wrapping her arm through Alessandro’s.

Alessandro looked down at the woman who had saved his life, and the child who had saved his soul.

“No,” Alessandro said softly, his voice full of a quiet, unbreakable peace. “You can call me Alessandro. Or... whatever you like.”

May you like

Emma giggled, running past them with the puppy.

The Wolf of the East River had finally found his pack. And this time, no one would ever take it away.
