CHAPTER 2 The Housekeeper Tried to Fire the Nanny... Until a Four-Year-Old Drew One Picture That Exposed a Twenty-Year Human Trafficking Secret

The next morning, Gabriel canceled every business meeting.

Nothing mattered except Lily.

For the first time since her mother's murder, she accepted breakfast.

Only if Claire fed her.

Only if Claire hummed the lullaby.

Within forty-eight hours, Lily began speaking again.

Just small words.

Mostly whispers.

But every sentence pointed toward the same nightmare.

"The lady in blue..."

"The basement..."

"The crying babies..."

Claire noticed something nobody else did.

Every time Lily mentioned "the lady in blue," Evelyn suddenly appeared nearby.

Always listening.

Always interrupting.

Always changing the subject.

Claire said nothing.

Instead...

She gave Lily crayons.

Children often remembered what adults couldn't.

Lily drew quietly for almost an hour.

Most pages showed houses.

Flowers.

Clouds.

Then she handed Claire one final picture.

Claire's smile disappeared.

The drawing showed...

A little girl holding her mother's hand.

Several men with guns.

A woman wearing a blue dress.

And...

A black delivery truck.

Across the side...

In crooked childlike letters...

Lily had copied something she'd seen.

VALMONT EXPORT.

Gabriel stared.

He knew that company.

It officially imported luxury furniture.

Unofficially...

It had disappeared fifteen years ago after federal investigations.

Only five people alive still knew the truth.

It had never sold furniture.

It sold children.

Gabriel slowly turned toward Evelyn.

Her face had become ghost white.

Before he could question her...

She suddenly ran.

Three bodyguards tackled her near the elevator.

As they searched her purse...

A hidden burner phone rang.

Gabriel answered.

A calm male voice laughed.

"I was wondering how long it would take."

"You've protected the wrong woman for twenty years."

Gabriel's blood froze.

"Who is this?"

"You buried your wife."

"But you never asked who sold your daughter."

The line disconnected.

Minutes later...

Forensic analysts unlocked Evelyn's phone.

Inside were hundreds of encrypted payments.

Photos.

Shipping schedules.

False passports.

And one photograph that made Gabriel stop breathing.

It showed four-year-old Lily...

Taken three weeks before the assassination.

Standing beside a smiling stranger.

Written beneath the photo:

DELIVERY CONFIRMED.

TARGET FAMILY PAID IN FULL.

Claire covered her mouth.

Gabriel whispered one impossible sentence.

"They weren't trying to kill Isabella..."

"They were trying to steal Lily."

Suddenly...

Everything about the attack changed.

His wife hadn't been collateral damage.

She had died protecting someone.

And somewhere...

May you like

The person who bought his daughter...

Was still waiting for the delivery they had paid millions to receive.
