Chapter 7 - The Traitor RevealedDawn broke over the Chesapeake Bay, painting the sky in violent shades of bruised purple and burning orange.

Inside the massive, minimalist kitchen of the Valente estate, Emily stood sipping black coffee from a porcelain cup, watching the waves crash against the concrete seawall below. Brutus was asleep on a thick Persian rug near the fireplace, snoring softly.

The heavy oak door swung open, and Marcus strode into the room, looking grim. He tossed a heavy leather briefcase onto the marble island.

“We cracked the phone of the second operative we caught at the shop, boss,” Marcus said, his eyes flicking briefly toward Emily before returning to Dante. “Messages, audio logs, and wire transfers.”

Dante didn't look up from his tablet. “Whose signature?”

Marcus swallowed hard. “Vance. But he didn't act alone. He’s got backing from the city council president, and… Julian Vance, your head of legal counsel.”

The kitchen grew deathly quiet.

Julian Vance was Dante’s cousin. The man who had managed the Valente family trusts for over a decade. The man who sat at Dante’s right hand during every major board meeting and family dinner.

Dante slowly set his tablet down on the marble counter. The movement was so deliberate, so terrifyingly calm, that even Marcus took half a step back.

“Where is Julian right now?” Dante asked.

“Emergency board meeting at Valente Global Tower,” Marcus reported quickly. “He called it an hour ago. He’s presenting an emergency motion to strip you of your CEO status, citing your ‘compromised security’ and the ongoing police raids at your properties. Half the board is already in his pocket.”

Emily watched Dante’s face. There was no shock. No betrayal. Only an absolute, terrifying clarity.

“He thinks he’s checkmated me,” Dante said softly. A cold, humorless smile touched his lips. He looked up, his dark eyes locking directly onto Emily. “Get your coat, Miss Parker.”

“Me?” Emily pointed at herself. “Why do I need to go to a corporate boardroom meeting? I groom dogs!”

“Because,” Dante said, walking over to retrieve his charcoal suit jacket from the back of a chair, “every good coup needs an audience. And I want Julian to see the exact moment his master plan falls apart because of a stray dog and a small-town groomer.”
