Chapter 9 - The Fall of the SyndicateThe holographic screens mounted on the boardroom walls flickered to life.

Streams of data cascaded across the displays: offshore bank accounts in the Cayman Islands, encrypted communications between Julian Vance and rival syndicates, and audio logs confirming the assassination plot against Dante—and the order to eliminate Brutus when the dog refused to cooperate.

The boardroom erupted into chaos.

Several board members stood up, shouting over one another, while others backed away from Julian as if he carried a contagious plague.

“It’s a forgery!” Julian screamed, his face contorted with rage as he lunged toward the table to grab the drive.

Before his fingers even touched the glass, Brutus let out a single, earth-shattering growl and rose to his full height, baring a terrifying row of white teeth. Julian froze, his hands hovering in mid-air, trembling violently.

The heavy glass doors behind them swung open again.

This time, it wasn't Marcus. It was a half-dozen federal agents in tactical gear, led by an FBI Special Agent in Charge who didn't even bother looking at the board members before slapping cold steel handcuffs onto Julian Vance’s wrists.

“Julian Vance, you are under arrest for racketeering, corporate espionage, and conspiracy to commit murder,” the agent recited coldly, spinning the sputtering man around and shoving him toward the exit.

As Julian was dragged past Dante, he shot a venomous glare across the room. “You think you won, Dante? The Syndicate isn't just me! They’ll come for you! They’ll come for everyone you care about!”

Dante didn't even flinch. He watched impassively as the doors closed behind his traitorous cousin.

The boardroom fell into a stunned, breathless silence. The remaining directors sat frozen in their seats, staring at the billionaire as if he had just single-handedly conquered a small country.

Dante slowly turned his head, his dark eyes sweeping across the terrified faces of the board.

“The meeting is adjourned,” Dante said quietly.

Within thirty seconds, the room was completely empty, save for Dante, Emily, and Brutus.

Emily exhaled a breath she felt like she had been holding since yesterday morning. She sank into one of the plush leather chairs, running a hand through her messy hair. “Well. That was certainly more exciting than trimming a poodle’s bangs.”

Dante walked over, standing beside her chair. The terrifying aura of the ruthless mafia boss seemed to melt away, leaving something entirely different in its place.

“You saved my life, Miss Parker,” Dante said softly. “And you saved my dog.”

“Your dog saved himself,” Emily corrected with a tired, genuine smile. “I just gave him a place to sit.”

Dante reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy, velvet-lined jeweler’s box. He placed it gently on the edge of the mahogany table.

“What’s this?” Emily asked, eyeing it warily. “More mob secrets?”

“Open it.”

Emily popped the clasp. Inside, resting against black velvet, was a solid platinum key encrusted with tiny diamonds shaped into the silhouette of a Cane Corso, alongside the deed to the entire commercial building where Happy Tails was located.

“I bought the property this morning,” Dante said simply. “Your rent is now one dollar a year. And that key opens the front door, the back door, and any secure perimeter alarm in the city if you ever need protection again.”

Emily looked from the key up into Dante’s dark, unwavering eyes. Her heart did a strange, dangerous flip in her chest.

“Mr. Valente,” she murmured, “are you trying to bribe a local groomer?”

“I’m just securing my dog’s favorite resting spot,” Dante replied, a slow, genuine smile breaking across his face.
