Chapter 4 - The Bitter Healing

For three weeks, Blackwater House was turned upside down.
Under Clara’s strict supervision, Lily’s diet was completely overhauled. Clara brewed bitter charcoal teas to flush the remaining toxins from the little girl's system. Every morning and every evening, she massaged Lily’s legs, stimulating the dormant muscles, forcing the blood to flow back into areas that had been numb for six years.
It was agonizing work. Lily would scream in pain as the sensation slowly returned to her limbs—a burning, prickling sensation that Lily described as "thousands of hot needles."
"I hate this!" Lily screamed one afternoon, throwing a wooden doll at the wall. "I want to go back to sleep! Make it stop, Clara!"
Clara didn't flinch. She picked up the doll, sat on the edge of the bed, and gently took Lily’s hands. "I know it hurts, Lily. But the pain means you are alive. The pain means your legs are waking up. Do you want to walk again? Do you want to run in the garden?"
Lily sniffled, her chest heaving. "Yes."
"Then we fight," Clara said softly. "We fight the pain together."
Adrian stood by the door, watching them in silence. Over the past weeks, Clara had noticed a change in him. The terrifying mafia boss seemed to soften whenever she was in the room. He began joining them for dinner, asking Clara about her childhood, her dreams, her life before she came to the city.
There was an undeniable spark growing between them—a quiet, burning connection born from shared trauma and a mutual devotion to the little girl.
But while the inside of the mansion was healing, the outside world was rotting.
Selene March had fled the city the night Dr. Kenneth was exposed. But Adrian’s intelligence network reported that she hadn't gone far. She had aligned herself with the Moretti family—Adrian’s fiercest and most ruthless rivals in the city's criminal underworld.
One evening, as Clara was tucking Lily into bed, a sudden crash shattered the quiet of the third floor.
The alarms in the mansion began to blare. Red emergency lights bathed the corridors in a bloody glow.
Clara rushed to the window and gasped. Down in the courtyard, black SUVs had breached the iron gates. Men in tactical gear, armed with automatic rifles, were pouring into the mansion.
"Clara!" Lily screamed, grabbing her blanket.
Clara locked the bedroom door, her heart pounding against her ribs. She looked around the room, searching for a weapon, her mind racing.
Suddenly, the door was blown open by a localized explosive charge. The blast threw Clara to the floor, her ears ringing violently.
Through the smoke, a figure stepped into the room.

It was Selene, dressed in black leather, holding a silver-plated pistol. Behind her were three heavily armed Moretti hitmen.
The Hook: "Did you really think a little peasant maid could ruin my future and get away with it?" Selene hissed, aiming the gun directly at Clara’s forehead. "Now, where is Adrian? Or should I just kill the little cripple first to save him the trouble?"
