Chapter 5 - The Siege of Blackwater

Clara pushed herself up from the debris, ignoring the pain in her scraped elbows. She stood directly between Selene’s gun and Lily’s bed.

"Leave her alone, Selene," Clara spat, trying to keep her voice steady. "Your fight is with Adrian, not a child."

Selene laughed, a high-pitched, manic sound. "My fight is with anyone who stands in my way. This mansion, the Vale fortune—it was supposed to be mine! My sister died so I could have this life. And you ruined it!"

"Your sister died because you poisoned her too, didn't you?" Clara bluffed, her eyes darting to the door, praying for Adrian to appear.

Selene’s eyes widened slightly, a flicker of guilt crossing her face before turning into pure malice. "She was weak. Just like Adrian is weak for letting you live. Kill them both," she ordered her men.

Before the hitmen could raise their weapons, a shadow fell over the doorway.

Adrian Vale appeared like a vengeful specter. He didn't use a gun; he moved with the brutal efficiency of a man who had survived a dozen turf wars. He disarmed the first hitman with a sickening crack of bone, using the man's own weapon to shoot the second.

The third hitman spun to aim at Adrian, but Adrian was faster, firing two rounds directly into his chest.

Selene gasped, stepping back toward the window. She raised her gun, aiming it at Adrian's head.

"Adrian, stop!" she shrieked. "One step closer and I'll—"

But Clara didn't hesitate. She grabbed a heavy brass lamp from the nightstand and threw it with all her might. It struck Selene’s arm, throwing her aim off. The gun went off, the bullet shattering a mirror.

Adrian lunged forward, grabbing Selene by the throat and slamming her against the wall. The pistol clattered to the floor.

"You took my wife," Adrian growled, his voice vibrating with a primal, terrifying rage. "You tried to take my daughter. You will never see the light of day again."

"Adrian, please!" Selene choked out, her face turning purple. "We're family!"

"You are nothing," Adrian whispered. He threw her to the floor, where Viktor and three of his own guards immediately swarmed in, pinning her down and dragging her away in handcuffs.

Adrian turned to Clara and Lily, his breathing heavy. He rushed to the bed, pulling both of them into a tight embrace. "Are you hurt? Are you okay?"

"We're fine," Clara gasped, clinging to him. "We're okay."

But as the adrenaline began to fade, Clara noticed something.

Lily wasn't crying. She was staring down at the floor, her face filled with absolute, wide-eyed shock.

During the chaos, in her sheer terror of the gunfire and the threat to Clara, Lily had scrambled off the bed.

The Hook: She was standing. On her own two feet. Lily Vale was standing on the cold marble floor, her tiny hands clutching the bedpost, her legs trembling but holding her weight for the first time in six years.
