CHAPTER 6 — The Lullaby Trap

One hour later...
Rain poured across the abandoned Brooklyn shipyard.
Fog rolled between rusted cargo containers.
The perfect place for people to disappear.
Claire stepped out of Gabriel's armored SUV.
Against his orders.
"I have to see her."
Gabriel nodded toward rooftops surrounding the dock.
Twenty-seven of his best men were already in position.
Invisible.
Waiting.
Claire walked alone toward Warehouse Nine.
The giant steel door slowly opened.
Inside...
Margaret Donnelly sat tied to a chair.
Bruised.
Weak.
But alive.
"Mom!"
Claire rushed forward.
Then stopped.
Margaret screamed.
"Don't!"
Too late.
The warehouse lights exploded on.
Red laser sights covered Claire's chest.
Dozens.
Maybe hundreds.
Vivian Chase slowly emerged from the shadows.
Elegant.
Perfectly dressed.
Still wearing the three-diamond necklace.
She smiled.
"I've waited twenty-five years for this reunion."
Gabriel stepped from the darkness.
"So have I."
Vivian laughed.
"You really think this was about Lily?"
She pointed toward Margaret.
"It started with her."
Margaret closed her eyes.
"I'm sorry..."
Claire looked between them.
"What is happening?"
Vivian answered.
"Your mother wasn't born Margaret Donnelly."
"She was Margaret Varrick."
Claire stopped breathing.
Gabriel stared.
"My wife's..."
"My twin sister."
Everything became clear.
The lullaby.
The photograph.
The resemblance.
The secrets.
Vivian clapped slowly.
"The Varrick family inherited something far more valuable than money."
She pulled an old brass key from her pocket.
"The Black Ledger."
Gabriel's expression changed instantly.
Vivian smiled wider.
"Exactly."
"You remember now."
"The ledger every crime family has been killing for."
"It doesn't contain money."
"It contains every politician..."
"Every judge..."
"Every federal agent..."
"...who ever worked for organized crime."
Claire whispered,
"And you think my mother knows where it is?"
Vivian looked directly at Margaret.
"I know she does."
Margaret finally opened her eyes.
Then she smiled.
Not at Vivian.
At Claire.
"I never told them..."
"...because I gave it to someone they would never suspect."
Vivian frowned.
"Who?"
Margaret looked toward little Lily...
Who had quietly wandered into the warehouse unnoticed, clutching her worn stuffed rabbit.
The little girl softly began singing the same lullaby.
Then she whispered...
"I've been hiding Grandpa's book."
Every face in the warehouse turned toward the child.
And in that single moment...
Everyone realized the four-year-old everyone thought was broken...
