Chapter 1 - THE SECRET LEDGER IN THE WALLMrs. Dorothy didn’t flinch. She stepped forward, her aging eyes filled with a mixture of pity and deep-seated disappointment for the powerful man standing before her.

"You called her Tessa," Mrs. Dorothy said, her voice dropping to a low, heavy whisper. "Because that’s what was written on her falsified application four years ago. But her real name isn't Tessa Callaway. It’s Theresa Moretti."

Ronan felt the room freeze around him. The air pulled out of his lungs.

Moretti.

The name was an open wound in the Boston underworld. Eight years ago, the Moretti crime syndicate was systematically wiped out in a single, blood-drenched weekend. The city called it The Red Cleansing. Ronan had spent almost a decade suspecting that his own rogue lieutenant—a vicious murderer named Vane Vance—had ordered the hit to consolidate power, but proof had gone up in flames along with the Moretti compound.

"Theresa was the youngest daughter of Antonio Moretti," Mrs. Dorothy continued, pulling a faded, brass-plated key from her pocket and placing it on Ronan’s desk. "The night her family died, she barely escaped with her life. She took a bullet to her collarbone and walked five miles in the snow before collapsing on my late husband's doorstep. She didn't come to this mansion four years ago looking for work, Ronan. She came here because your house was the only place in North America where Vane Vance’s hitmen were too terrified to tread."

Ronan’s hands clenched into white-knuckled fists. "She used me as a shield."

"No," Mrs. Dorothy corrected sternly. "She paid for her shelter with blood, sweat, and absolute devotion. Go look behind the framed oil painting in her room, Ronan. The third floorboard from the left."

Without another word, Ronan stormed back to the narrow, sterile room in the servants' quarter. Kneeling on the cold wooden floor, he pried up the board Mrs. Dorothy had described. Beneath it lay a thick, leather-bound notebook and a small cassette recorder.

He opened the ledger. Page after page was filled with meticulous, hand-drawn diagrams, financial transaction logs, and dates. But it wasn't a blueprint to betray Ronan.

It was a master list of assassination attempts against Ronan Gallagher that Tessa had quietly, single-handedly neutralized over four years.

March 14th: Replaced poisoned sugar batch delivered by Vance’s front company.

August 22nd: Unplugged tampered brake line wires on the Bentley while the mechanics took a break.

November 2nd: Bribed the new security guard to leave his shift early after discovering he carried a concealed weapon unregistered to the syndicate.

She wasn't just fixing his blood pressure medication or leaving a light on for him. She was an angel of death’s worst nightmare, acting as a invisible guardian demon between Ronan and the grave.

And then, he flipped to the very last entry, dated three days ago:

"Vane Vance found out where I am. He threatened to blow up the Gallagher main harbor shipment if I didn't leave the estate and hand myself over to him before Friday. If I die, Ronan lives. That is the trade."

Ronan dropped the ledger. A cold, feral rage—a beast that had been dormant inside him for years—roared to life. She hadn't resigned. She had surrendered herself to save his life.
