Chapter 3 - The Traitor's Hand

"Lower the weapon, Walter," Roland said, his voice dropping into a register that meant absolute execution for anyone who disobeyed. He had entered the room right behind Marlene, his hand already resting on his own custom-made firearm.

Pike’s eyes darted around the room, sweat beading on his forehead. "Boss, think about it. This woman shows up out of nowhere, claims to be the mother, and suddenly we’re injecting her blood directly into the heirs? What if this is a setup by the Moretti family? What if she’s the one who poisoned them in the first place to get inside this house?"

It was a clever lie, designed to exploit Roland’s notorious paranoia. For a split second, Roland hesitated. His underworld instincts told him to trust no one, to question every coincidence.

Marlene saw the hesitation in the mafia boss's eyes. She knew that if she waited for these men to negotiate their criminal politics, her son would die.

With a primal scream of maternal rage, Marlene didn't back down. Instead of retreating from the gun, she stepped directly in front of the syringe Dr. Evans was holding, grabbed it from his hand, and stabbed the needle directly into her own arm, drawing the blood into the line connected to Leo’s main IV port.

"Shoot me then!" Marlene screamed at Pike, her eyes burning with a terrifying ferocity. "If you want these children dead, you’ll have to kill their mother while she’s saving them!"

Pike flinched. He didn't fire. The hesitation proved his guilt. If he were a loyal guard protecting the boss, he would have shot to neutralize a threat. But he was terrified of Roland, and he knew that pulling the trigger now would mean his immediate, agonizing death.

Roland didn't miss the reaction. In a movement faster than the eye could follow, he bypassed Marlene, grabbed Pike by the throat, and slammed him against the glass wall of the ICU. The heavy glass cracked under the impact.

"It was you," Roland whispered, his fingers crushing Pike’s windpipe. "The Morettis couldn't have bypassed the nursery security without an internal code. You poisoned my children. And now you’re trying to stop the cure."

"B-Boss..." Pike choked out, his face turning a dark shade of purple as his gun clattered to the floor. "I... I did it for... for the family... you were becoming soft... because of them..."

"You die slow for this," Roland hissed, throwing Pike to the floor, where two loyal guards immediately pinned him down, dragging him out of the room as he begged for a quick death.

Roland turned back to the beds. The room was chaotic. Dr. Evans was working furiously, adjusting the valves as Marlene stood perfectly still, her blood flowing through the clear plastic tubes into her son's fragile body. Her face was growing increasingly pale as the rapid extraction took its toll, but she refused to sit down, her other hand reaching across the gap between the beds to hold her daughter Mia’s cold, tiny hand.

"Increase the flow," Marlene ordered Evans, her voice weakening but steady. "Take what you need for the girl too. Do it at the same time."

"Mrs. Walsh, your body can't handle a dual extraction at this speed," Evans warned. "You could go into hypovolemic shock. Your heart could fail."

"Then let it fail," Marlene said, looking directly at Roland, who stood at the foot of the beds, looking entirely helpless for the first time in his notorious life. "He took their lives once. I'm giving them back. Do it."

Roland stepped forward, his hand hovering over Marlene’s shoulder, but he didn't dare touch her. He felt a profound, crushing weight in his chest. This woman, whom his household had treated like dirt hours ago, was showing a level of courage and sacrifice that put his entire criminal empire to shame.

As the hours ticked away into the deep night, the monitors began to change. The erratic, chaotic heart rhythms of the twins began to stabilize. The dark, sickly color in their cheeks was slowly replaced by a faint, healthy pink.

They were surviving. The poison was being flushed out by their mother’s untainted, fiercely protective blood.

But Marlene was fading. Her eyes drifted shut, her knees buckling.

Before she could hit the floor, Roland caught her. He gathered her thin, exhausted frame into his arms, feeling the rapid, faint beating of her heart. For the first time in ten years, tears pricked the eyes of the Chicago Don.

He carried her to an adjacent bed, laying her down with a gentleness that surprised the remaining medical staff. He sat by her side, watching over the woman who had saved his world, knowing that the morning would bring a war he wasn't sure he was prepared to fight.
