Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Twisted Betrayal

Two weeks later, the Castellano mansion had been rebuilt, its scars covered by fresh paint and new marble. But the power structure inside had fundamentally changed.
Marlene was no longer wearing a maid’s uniform or an old, faded coat. She stood at the top of the grand staircase wearing a simple, elegant dark dress, watching Leo and Mia play in the courtyard below under the heavy guard of men who now answered to her just as much as they did to Roland.
Roland stepped up behind her, his arm in a sling but his presence as commanding as ever.
"The Commission has recognized my absolute control over the city," Roland said quietly. "The Moretti assets have been liquidated. Half of it has been placed into a blind trust under your name, Marlene. If you want to take the children and leave... if you want to run away from this life, you have the financial power to do it now. I won't stop you. I owe you that much."
Marlene turned to look at him, her expression unreadable. "You think I want to run? You think I want to spend the rest of my life looking over my shoulder, wondering when the next Walter Pike or Isabella will show up to take them again? No, Roland. I’m not running."
Roland looked at her with a mixture of surprise and respect. "Then what do you want?"
"I want this empire," Marlene said, her voice dropping into a cold, calculated tone that sent a shiver through the Don himself. "I want the Castellano name to mean protection for my children. We operate together. You are the muscle, Roland. But I am the blood. We run this city as equals, or I take my children and I dismantle your syndicate piece by piece from the inside."
Roland stared at her for a long moment, a slow, dark smile spreading across his face. He recognized the ruthless fire in her eyes—a fire that had been forged in the depths of poverty and maternal desperation. "An alliance, then. To the death."
"To the death," Marlene agreed.
She turned to walk down the stairs to join her children. But as she reached the bottom step, Dr. Evans stepped out from the private study, his face pale, holding a confidential file that had just arrived from the final forensic sweep of the Moretti estate.
"Marlene... Mr. Castellano..." Evans whispered, his voice shaking violently. "There’s... there’s a final document from the Moretti vault. The genetic report... the one concerning the twins' biological origin."
Roland walked down the stairs, his brow furrowed. "We already know she’s the mother, Evans. My blood and her blood matched perfectly. The DNA link was proven."
"Yes," Dr. Evans said, his hands trembling as he handed the file to Roland. "She is the mother. There is no doubt about that. But look at the father's genetic profile in the original laboratory records from five years ago."
Roland scanned the document, his eyes widening in absolute horror as the words on the paper rearranged his entire reality.
The biological father of the twins wasn't Roland Castellano.
The DNA structure matched a close familial relative—a genetic match that revealed the true mastermind behind the entire five-year plot. The father was Roland’s younger, supposedly deceased brother, Julian Castellano, who had faked his death six years ago to operate the city's black market from the deep shadows.
Suddenly, the front doors of the mansion blew off their hinges with a deafening explosion.
A dozen men in unmarked black tactical gear flooded the hall, weapons raised. Standing at the center of the breach was a man who looked exactly like Roland, but with a cruel, jagged scar running down his cheek and eyes that held no mercy.
Julian Castellano smiled, stepping into the ruined hall, looking directly at Marlene.
"Hello, Roland," Julian said, his voice an eerie echo of his brother's. "Thanks for clearing out the Morettis for me. And thank you for keeping my wife and my children safe inside my house. Now... I believe it's time to take back what's mine."

Marlene stood frozen at the foot of the stairs, her mind exploding with the ultimate realization: her husband hadn't died five years ago in debt. He had faked his death, orchestrated the theft of his own children, and used her as a pawn in a multi-year chess game to completely destroy his brother and take over the Chicago underworld.
She looked at Roland, then at Julian. The real war hadn't even begun yet.
