Chapter 4 - The Syndicate’s Inside Man"Marcus," Rory muttered, the pieces of the puzzle violently snapping into place in his mind. "You. You funded her layout."

"Funded her? Rory, I hired her," Marcus smiled, stepping down the metal staircase with slow, deliberate steps. "Susan was my greatest investment. For two years, she’s been feeding me the internal routing codes for your shipping docks, your money laundering fronts, and your security blind spots."

Susan walked over to Marcus, slipping her arm smoothly through his, leaning against his shoulder like a devoted partner.

"My sister was a fool for marrying you, Rory," Susan spat, her facade of sweetness completely melting away to reveal raw, venomous hatred. "She was going to run away with me, take her share of the empire, and leave you with nothing. But when your men ‘accidentally’ took care of her car accident... well, I decided I’d finish the job from the inside."

"You killed your own sister," Rory said, his voice trembling—not with fear, but with a lethal, suppressed fury that felt like a ticking bomb.

"Collateral damage for a greater cause," Susan smiled coldly. "And tonight, once Marcus’s clean-up crew finishes with you and your nosy little maid here, the twins will be placed in my legal custody. The remaining Starks assets will be liquidated, and the syndicate will belong to us."

Marcus raised his submachine gun, his finger resting lightly on the trigger. "It’s been a good run, Rory. Say goodbye to your empire."

Veronica’s heart hammered against her ribs. She glanced sideways at Rory, measuring the distance, calculating the angles. The gun was pointed at Rory, but Marcus’s attention was split between both of them.

"You talk too much, Marcus," Veronica said suddenly, her voice cutting through the damp air.

Marcus frowned, his eyes snapping toward her. "What did you say, little maid?"

"I said..." Veronica lunged forward with blinding speed, swinging the heavy brass candlestick with all her might directly into the glass face of the boathouse's emergency fire extinguisher mounted on the wall beside her.
