Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Moscow

“You saved the man who destroyed a continent. Do you still feel like a hero, Elena?”Two hours later, Elena and Volkov were shivering in a rusted, abandoned fishing shack three miles down the coast. The freezing rain of the Oregon winter beat a relentless tattoo against the tin roof.

Elena had managed to steal a first-aid kit from her car’s trunk before they fled into the woods, but her car was now undoubtedly a charred shell, just like her house. Everything she owned was gone.

She worked under the dim light of her phone screen, her hands surprisingly steady as she sutured the deep gash in Volkov's side. He didn't flinch. He sat on a wooden crate, staring into the dark, his body rigid.

“You’re Alexander Volkov,” Elena said softly, tying off the final knot. She had seen the news broadcasts before the cell towers lost signal in the storm. Alexander Volkov. The 'Kingpin of the Baltic.' A man who reportedly controlled half of the illicit shipping lanes in Eastern Europe, a man who had vanished six months ago after a bloody coup in Moscow.

Everyone thought he was dead, betrayed by his own lieutenant and blown up in his dacha.

“I was,” Volkov said, his voice cold. “Now, I am a ghost. And ghosts do not have friends.”

“Who was the man in the cashmere coat?” Elena asked, wiping her bloody hands on a rag.

“My brother,” Volkov replied. His silver eyes met hers, reflecting the faint blue light of her phone. “Dmitri. He is the one who put the bomb on my plane. He is the one who bought my men. He wants the throne, but he cannot take it as long as there is a whisper that I am alive.”

“And now I’m in the middle of a mafia civil war,” Elena said, a bitter laugh escaping her lips. “I’m a nurse, Alexander. I save lives. I don’t run from international assassins.”

“You saved mine,” Alexander said, stepping closer. The sheer physical presence of the man was overwhelming. Despite his injuries, he radiated a terrifying authority. “Which means you are now marked. Dmitri does not leave witnesses. He will hunt you to the ends of the earth just to ensure I have no allies.”

Suddenly, the phone in Elena’s hand vibrated.

It wasn't a call. It was a video message from an unknown number.

With a sinking feeling, Elena tapped the screen.

The video showed a brightly lit hospital corridor. The camera panned to a locker room—the staff locker room at Elena’s hospital. A man’s hand, wearing a heavy gold signet ring with a wolf’s head, tapped on a locker with her name on it: E. MARLOWE, RN.

A voice spoke from behind the camera—Dmitri’s smooth, terrifying voice.

“We know where you work, Elena. We know where your sister lives in Seattle. We know your shift starts tomorrow at 7:00 AM. Bring us Alexander, or we will start dissecting your world, piece by piece.”

The screen went black.

Elena dropped the phone, her face completely drained of color. “My sister... oh my god, Sarah.”

Alexander picked up the phone, his face hardening into stone. “They are baiting us. They want us to run. If we run, they win.”

“I have to save her!” Elena cried, grabbing his jacket. “I don’t care about your throne or your money! I saved your life! Help me save hers!”

Alexander looked down at her hands on his chest, then up at her desperate eyes.

“We do not run,” Alexander said, a dark, lethal promise in his voice. “We go to war.”
