Chapter 5 - The Masterpiece of Betrayal

“Blood is thicker than water, brother. But it spills just the same.”“Sarah!” Elena screamed, stepping forward, but Alexander caught her arm, keeping her behind his massive frame.

“Let her go, Dmitri,” Alexander said, his voice flat, devoid of any emotion. “This is between us. The girl has nothing to do with the family.”

“Ah, but she does,” Dmitri purred, taking a slow sip of his drink. “She is the reason you are here. You see, brother, you always had a weakness. You pretend to be a wolf, but you have the heart of a sheep. You care about the collateral damage. That is why the Board chose me to replace you.”

Dmitri snapped his fingers.

From the shadows of the unfinished concrete pillars, six heavily armed mercenaries stepped out, their rifles trained on Alexander and Elena.

Elena’s heart sank. They were trapped. There was no cover, no way out.

“Did you really think you could slip into my stronghold unnoticed?” Dmitri laughed, shaking his head. “I’ve tracked your stolen vehicle since you crossed the city limits. I allowed you to come here. I wanted to see the look on your face when you realized that your survival was just a temporary delay of the inevitable.”

Dmitri walked over to Sarah, placing a heavy hand on her shoulder. Sarah sobbed behind the tape, her eyes wide with terror as she looked at Elena.

“Now,” Dmitri said, drawing a gold-plated pistol from his waistband. “Here is how this plays out. Alexander, you will drop your weapons. You will sign the transfer of the Baltic shipping ledgers over to my accounts. And then, I will let the nurse and her sister go. If you refuse, I will kill them both in front of you, and then I will take my time dismantling you.”

Elena looked at Alexander. His face was a mask of cold stone. He didn't look at her, nor did he look at Sarah. He only looked at his brother.

“The Baltic ledgers are encrypted,” Alexander said quietly. “They require a biometric key. My retinal scan and my thumbprint.”

“I know,” Dmitri smiled, raising the gun. “I don't need you alive for that. I only need your head.”

Elena felt a surge of pure adrenaline. She looked at the gun in her hand, hidden behind Alexander's back. She looked at her sister.

If I don't act, we all die here.

She didn't think. She didn't plan.

Elena stepped out from behind Alexander, raised the compact pistol, and fired directly at Dmitri.

The gunshot was deafening in the concrete space.

The bullet missed Dmitri’s head by inches, shattering the glass window behind him. The sudden distraction was all Alexander needed.

With blinding speed, Alexander drew his weapon and opened fire.

The penthouse erupted into a chaotic symphony of gunfire, shattering glass, and screams. Alexander tackled Elena to the ground as a hail of bullets tore through the air above them. He rolled, firing three precise shots that dropped two of the mercenaries instantly.

“Get Sarah!” Alexander roared over the din of the gunfight, throwing himself behind a concrete pillar to draw the enemy fire. “Go!”
