Chapter 1 - The Weight of Seven YearsThe mahogany door of Dominic Vale’s private office clicked shut with a heavy, muffled thud that echoed off the imported marble floors. Grace Miller stood in the center of the vast, dimly lit room. She did not fidget. She did not smooth her uniform skirt or look down at her worn service shoes. Instead, she met Dominic’s gaze—a look so sharp and heavy it felt like physical pressure.

Dominic leaned forward, his knuckles pressed flat against the dark wood of his desk. His tailored charcoal suit strained slightly against the broad lines of his shoulders.

"How?" Dominic repeated, his voice a low, gravel-scraped purr that had made hardened syndicate lieutenants choke on their words. "Because my brother hasn't held a real conversation with anyone outside of his doctors, his lawyers, and myself in seven years. Yet you’ve spent five days passing literary notes back and forth like a pair of schoolkids in the back row."

Grace blinked slowly. Her posture remained relaxed, grounded, and entirely unbothered by the aura of danger radiating from the head of the Vale family.

"Mr. Vale," Grace said, her voice steady and rich. "If you spent all day staring at a blank wall or a glowing cursor, waiting for someone to treat you like a human being instead of a fragile porcelain doll, you’d probably appreciate a decent plot twist, too."

Dominic narrowed his eyes. The audacity was breathtaking. No one spoke to him like that. Not his capos, not the city councilmen who owed him favors, and certainly not the cleaning staff.

"He is isolated for his own protection," Dominic said, stepping out from behind the desk, closing the distance between them until he towered over her by several inches. "The world outside these gates is filled with people who want to hurt my family. Every person who steps foot into this east wing is vetted, checked, and monitored. Which brings me to a very interesting detail I found in your background check this morning."

Grace didn't flinch. She tilted her chin up just a fraction.

"Oh? Did you find out I’m an international spy, or did you just discover I was born in Gary, Indiana?"

"I found out that six years ago, you worked maintenance and administrative support for a logistics firm on the south side of Chicago," Dominic said, his eyes locking onto hers. "A firm that was owned, through three layers of offshore holding companies, by my uncle, Victor Vale."

The air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. Victor Vale was Dominic’s greatest enemy—a ruthless, exiled uncle who had tried to usurp control of the family syndicate a decade ago and had been hunting for weaknesses in Dominic's empire ever since.

Grace stared at him for three long seconds. Then, a slow, humorless smile touched the corners of her mouth.

"Do you really think," Grace whispered, "that if Victor Vale sent an operative to infiltrate your fortress, she’d start by cleaning the baseboards in your brother's study?"
