Chapter 1 - The Hollow Echo

Word Count: ~3,500 words

The heavy iron-reinforced wood of the blue door did not yield easily. Every strike of the heavy tactical axe echoed through the damp, subterranean corridor like a heartbeat slowing to a stop.

Matteo Valenti stood like a statue carved from obsidian. His tailored suit jacket was thrown over a stone banister; his sleeves were rolled up to his forearms, revealing the dark, sprawling tattoos of the Valenti syndicate. Beside him, little Sophie was being held by Marco, one of the few guards Matteo still trusted implicitly. The girl’s face was buried in the guard’s shoulder, her small body shaking with silent, exhausted sobs.

"Again!" Matteo growled, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that made the men wielding the tools swing harder.

To Matteo's right stood Celeste Valenti—his stepmother, the widow of his late father. She stood with her arms crossed, her silk wrapper immaculate despite the dampness of the basement. Her face was a mask of cold, aristocratic indifference, but Matteo did not miss the slight, rhythmic tapping of her diamond-encrusted finger against her elbow.

"Matteo, this is absurd," Celeste said, her voice dripping with practiced condescension. "You are destroying historical estate property because a traumatized child claims she heard knocking. Elena is likely visiting her sister. She is a flighty girl. I told you, she asked for a leave of absence."

"She didn’t take her daughter, Celeste," Matteo said, not looking at her. His eyes were locked on the splinters flying from the blue door. "Elena would not leave Sophie. Not for three hours. Definitely not for three days."

"Perhaps she realized the reality of raising a bastard child in a mafia household was too much," Celeste sneered softly. "You soft-hearted fool. You let these servants treat this fortress like a sanctuary."

"Silence," Matteo commanded. The sheer authority in his voice made Celeste stiffen, her jaw tightening.

With a deafening CRACK, the central panel of the door gave way. A crowbar was wedged into the gap, and with a collective heave from two guards, the door burst open.

A wave of stale, freezing air rushed out, carrying the metallic tang of blood and the sickeningly sweet scent of damp decay.

Matteo didn't wait. He snatched a heavy flashlight from a guard and stepped through the threshold.

The room beyond was not a storage closet. It was an old cell, a remnant of the estate's dark history from the early 1900s when his ancestors ruled the territory with iron fists. The walls were weeping concrete, covered in green mold.

And there, in the far corner, slumped against a rusted pipe, was Elena.

Her face was deathly pale, her lips cracked and blue. Her clothes were torn, and her hands were raw, the fingernails split and bleeding from clawing at the concrete walls and the solid wood of the door.

"Elena!" Matteo lunged forward, dropping to his knees. He checked her pulse. It was thready, dangerously weak, but she was alive.

Elena’s eyelids fluttered. The bright beam of the flashlight made her wince. "M-Matteo..." she gasped, her voice barely a dry rattle. "Sophie..."

"She’s safe. She’s right outside," Matteo whispered, his hand going to the back of her head to support her. "Who did this to you?"

Before Elena could answer, her eyes drifted past Matteo's shoulder toward the doorway, where Celeste stood. Terror, raw and primal, flashed across the maid’s face. She clutched Matteo’s shirt with trembling, bloody fingers.

"The... the papers..." Elena whispered, her chest heaving. "Under the floorboards... in the nursery... They are going to... kill..."

She couldn't finish. Her head rolled back as she lost consciousness.

"Get the medic! Now!" Matteo roared. He scooped Elena’s frail body into his arms and strode out of the cell. As he passed Celeste, he paused. His eyes met hers, cold enough to freeze water.

"You," Matteo said, "will stay in your quarters. If you attempt to leave this estate, I will personally throw you into the cell we just opened."

May you like

Celeste merely smiled, a chilling, triumphant smirk. "You have no proof of anything, Matteo. I am a Valenti. You cannot touch me without starting a war with my family's faction."

"Try me," Matteo whispered.
