Chapter 5 - The Sacred and the Profane

Word Count: ~3,500 words

Matteo looked at Sophie. Her tear-filled eyes met his. She gave a tiny, almost imperceptible nod, remembering what he had told her in the corridor: Be brave, little bird.

"You think you've won, Leone?" Matteo said, taking a slow step forward. "You think my men are the only ones protecting this estate?"

Celeste scoffed. "Don't bluff, Matteo. You have no one left."

"I don't need anyone," Matteo said. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, black detonator.

Don Leone’s eyes widened.

"The western wing wasn't the only part of this estate I secured when I returned," Matteo said, a dark smile spreading across his face. "I knew there was a mole. I knew Celeste was planning something. So, I rigged the foundations. The moment my heart stops, or the moment I press this button, the entire eastern and western wings collapse into the old mining tunnels below."

"You're lying!" Celeste screamed, her composure finally breaking. "You wouldn't kill yourself! You wouldn't kill the girl!"

"I would rather we all die together in the ruins of my family’s pride than let you take a single dime of my father's legacy," Matteo said, his thumb hovering over the red button. "Try me, Celeste. Tell your man to pull the trigger."

The mercenary holding Sophie hesitated, looking at Don Leone for instructions.

Don Leone, a veteran of the old ways, recognized the look in Matteo’s eyes. It was the look of a man who had absolutely nothing left to lose.

"Lower your weapons," Leone commanded his men.

"What?!" Celeste shrieked. "No! Kill him! He's bluffing!"

"He is not bluffing, you foolish woman," Leone hissed. "I did not survive forty years in this business by playing chicken with a madman."

Leone turned back to Matteo. "We leave. We take the docks, and we leave you the estate. But we keep the girl as leverage until we are clear of the city limits."

"No," Matteo said. "The girl stays. You leave now, or we all go to hell together."

The tension in the chapel was suffocating. The wind howled through a shattered pane of stained glass, rustling the silk of Celeste’s gown.

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the back of the chapel.

The heavy doors burst open, and a swarm of federal tactical officers poured in, flashlights blinding, rifles drawn.

"FBI! Hands in the air! Drop your weapons!"
