Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Silk Gown

Length: ~3,500 words

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was packed to capacity for the annual Autumn Society Gala. The air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume, betrayal, and gossip. Rumors had been flying for two weeks since the disastrous night at the Clermont mansion.

Seraphina Vale stood near the entrance, dressed in a blood-red gown, surrounded by her sycophantic friends. She had managed to spin the narrative: Julian was having a temporary mental breakdown, the maid was fired, and the wedding was still on.

"He’ll come begging back," Seraphina scoffed, sipping her champagne. "He needs my family's shipping ports. That little maid is probably back in the gutter where she belongs."

Suddenly, the brass trumpets of the ballroom fell silent. The double doors swung open.

The announcer’s voice echoed across the room, sending a shockwave through the crowd: "Presenting Mr. Julian Clermont and his fiancée, Miss Isabella Raye."

The collective gasp was deafening.

Julian stepped into the light, looking devastatingly handsome in a custom black tuxedo. But it wasn't him that made people drop their glasses. It was the woman on his arm.

Isabella was unrecognizable. The gray maid’s uniform was gone, replaced by a breathtaking, midnight-blue silk gown that clung to her curves like liquid starlight. Her long dark hair was swept up in an elegant chignon, exposing her porcelain neck, which was adorned with the legendary Clermont Sapphire—a necklace worth forty million dollars. Her posture was flawless, the perfect alignment of a prima ballerina.

Seraphina’s glass shattered on the floor. "No... no, this is a joke!"

Julian led Isabella down the grand staircase. Every eye followed them. The very same guests who had raised their phones to film Isabella's humiliation two weeks ago were now whispering in terror, scrambling to clear a path for her.

"Smile, my love," Julian whispered in Isabella's ear, his hand firm on her waist. "They are afraid of you. Show them why they should be."

Isabella held her head high, but inside, her mind was racing. This was a dangerous game. She wasn't just facing Seraphina; she was facing a society that chewed up outsiders.

As they reached the ballroom floor, Seraphina blocked their path, her face twisted with malice. "Julian! Have you lost your mind?! You bring this... this servant into the Plaza? She cleaned my shoes! She took money to dance like a dog!"

Isabella didn't flinch. She stepped forward, looking down at Seraphina with cold, regal disdain.

"Actually, Miss Vale, I believe the $7,000 you gave me was a down payment," Isabella said, her voice smooth and echoing clearly for everyone to hear. "I used it to buy out the cleaning agency you use. As of this morning, I am your landlord for the Vale estate offices. And your rent is just went up by three hundred percent."

The crowd erupted into furious murmurs. Seraphina turned pale.

But before Seraphina could speak, an elderly, imposing man with a silver cane stepped out of the shadows. It was Arthur Clermont—Julian’s ruthless father, the man who had banished Isabella seven years ago.

Arthur stared at Isabella, his eyes cold as ice. "You," he hissed. "I thought I paid you to stay in the shadows permanently."
