Chapter 4 - Secrets in the Whispering Gallery

Length: ~3,500 words
The confrontation between Arthur Clermont and Isabella threatened to shatter the gala’s pristine facade. Julian immediately stepped between them, his jaw clenched, a dangerous aura radiating from him.
"Father," Julian said, his voice laced with venom. "You will respect my future wife."
"Wife?" Arthur laughed, a dry, raspy sound. "You marry this girl, Julian, and I will invoke the grandfather clause in the company charter. You will be stripped of the CEO title by Monday morning. A Clermont does not marry a girl whose mother died in a public charity ward."
Isabella felt a cold dread wash over her. A public charity ward? Her mother was currently in a high-end private clinic in upstate New York—Julian had just told her that two weeks ago. Why did Arthur think her mother died in a charity ward?
Before Julian could respond, Isabella noticed a strange look pass between Arthur and Seraphina’s father, Victor Vale, who had just joined the circle. Victor looked nervous, sweating through his expensive collar.
"Julian, we need to speak in private," Isabella whispered urgently, tugging at his sleeve.
Julian saw the genuine panic in her eyes and nodded. He cast one last warning glance at his father and led Isabella away into the Plaza’s famous Whispering Gallery—a secluded, arched hallway where architectural acoustics allowed whispers to carry across the corridor.
Once they were alone in the dimly lit hallway, Isabella turned to Julian, her hands shaking. "Julian, your father said my mother died in a charity ward. But she's alive. You told me you found her at the upstate clinic!"
Julian’s brow furrowed. "She is alive, Isabella. I’ve been paying for her treatment through an anonymous foundation for the past two years, ever since I track down the clinic. I thought you knew. I thought that’s why you took the maid job—to pay for the hidden expenses."
"No..." Isabella’s breath hitched. "I didn't know it was you. The clinic told me an anonymous donor was covering ninety percent of it, but they said the donor was... Victor Vale."
Julian froze. "Why would Seraphina’s father pay for your mother’s clinic?"
Suddenly, from across the curved archway of the gallery, a hushed conversation bounced off the walls, perfectly audible to Julian and Isabella. It was Arthur Clermont and Victor Vale, speaking in the shadows on the other side of the pillars.
"You fool!" Arthur hissed to Victor. "You told me the girl was taken care of seven years ago! You said you paid her off and she left the country!"
"I tried!" Victor whispered back frantically. "But she stayed to care for her sick mother. I had to keep her mother alive in that private clinic under a fake name so Isabella wouldn't go to the press! If Julian finds out what we did to Isabella’s father seven years ago... if he finds out that the Clermont-Vale merger is built on the stolen patents of Isabella’s father... we are both going to federal prison!"

Isabella gasped, covering her mouth. Her father hadn't died of a heart attack due to a failed business seven years ago. He had been ruined, robbed, and framed by the very men standing in that room.
Julian’s face went completely blank—the terrifying calm before a catastrophic storm. He looked at Isabella, the puzzle pieces finally locking into place. The reason she left him wasn't because she didn't love him. It was because his family had destroyed hers.
