Chapter 8 - The Corporate WarBefore I could process the staggering weight of his words, the heavy double doors of the penthouse suite suddenly burst open with a loud crash.

Three burly security guards tumbled backward into the room, groaning as they hit the floor.

Stepping over them into the grand suite was a man I recognized instantly from financial news channels: Marcus Vance, Julian’s ruthless cousin and co-board member at Vance Global Logistics. Behind him stood two corporate lawyers holding stacks of hostile takeover papers.

"Well, well, well," Marcus sneered, a cruel, triumphant smile stretching across his face as he adjusted his designer tie. "Playing white knight to a waitress in Chicago while your entire company is burning to the ground in Los Angeles."

Julian didn't flinch. His posture stiffened into solid granite, his eyes turning into shards of arctic ice.

"You crossed a line coming here, Marcus," Julian said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous growl.

"I crossed a line?" Marcus laughed harshly. "You abandoned your emergency board meeting to chase a penniless single mother across the country! The board is voting to strip you of your CEO title as we speak. Vance Global is mine, Julian. And as for your little girlfriend here—" Marcus glared at me with pure disgust— "she's about to find out what happens when you associate with a sinking ship."

Panic flared in my chest. Because of me. He came here for me, and now he was losing everything he built.

"Julian," I whispered, grabbing his sleeve. "Make them leave. Let me go. You can't lose your company over me."

Julian slowly turned his head to look down at me. He reached up, covering my trembling hand with his large, warm palm, and squeezed it gently.

"Emily," Julian said softly, his voice echoing through the silent room with absolute certainty. "I built this empire once from nothing. I can build it twice. But I will never, ever walk away from the woman who gave me my first break."

He turned back to face Marcus, his eyes blazing with absolute power.

"You think you've won, Marcus?" Julian asked coldly.

Marcus smirked. "The vote is already cast."

Julian reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone, and tapped a single button on the screen. He held it up so the glowing display faced Marcus and his lawyers.

"Check your email, cousin," Julian whispered.

Marcus's smug smile faltered. He pulled out his phone with trembling fingers. As his eyes scanned the screen, the color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking like a ghost.

"No," Marcus stammered, his voice shaking. "That's... that's impossible. You sold your shares in the Asian port authority—"

"To secure full ownership of the global shipping lanes, yes," Julian finished smoothly, stepping forward like a predator closing in on its prey. "While you were busy trying to orchestrate a coup with the board, I quietly bought up your personal debt, acquired your offshore accounts, and legally locked you out of voting rights for the next decade. You aren't taking over Vance Global, Marcus. You're fired."

May you like

The lawyers standing behind Marcus immediately dropped their briefcases, turned around, and walked straight out of the penthouse without uttering a single word.

Marcus stood trembling, utterly defeated, before turning and fleeing the room in disgrace, the heavy doors slamming shut behind him.
