Chapter 4 - THE KING’S DEBTSilas Vane didn't look at me until Elena was safely tucked into the back of his SUV. When he finally turned, his gaze was different. It wasn't the cold look of the gunman; it was the look of a man who was calculating the weight of a debt that could never be repaid.

"You," he said, walking toward me. "You are Sarah Williams."
"I... I just wanted to help her," I stammered.
"You didn't just help her. You pulled her from the belly of a beast," he said. He reached into his coat and pulled out a card. It wasn't a business card; it was a heavy, black metal plate with an embossed symbol. "You are not safe, Miss Williams. Those men you saw? They weren't my men. They were a splinter cell from the Vane organization. My own staff betrayed me."
