Chapter 6 - The Turn of the Tide

Richard lunged forward with terrifying speed, his hand closing around Lucy’s wrist to wrench the drive away.

Lucy didn't panic. Years of dodging screaming toddlers, managing household crises on four hours of sleep, and standing up to abusive landlords had forged her into something unbreakable. Instead of pulling away, she drove her heel straight down onto Richard’s instep with the force of a steel-toed boot.

Richard howled, stumbling backward.

Before he could recover, the screech of tearing metal echoed through the cavernous warehouse.

All the overhead doors slammed upward simultaneously, flooding the dim interior with blinding morning light. Framing the entrances weren't just police cruisers with sirens wailing in full chorus—it was Chuck’s massive tow truck, its headlights blazing, parked right across the exit. And stepping out of the passenger side wasn't a random cop. It was Detective Vance—no relation to Richard—holding a federal arrest warrant with three state troopers right behind him.

"Richard Vance! Federal marshal! Drop the weapon and put your hands behind your back!"

Richard spun around, panicking, his eyes darting toward the open bay doors, then toward our mother tied in the chair. In a fit of absolute, sociopathic desperation, he grabbed a heavy iron pipe from a nearby crate and swung it toward Lucy’s head.

I couldn't help it. I screamed, bursting out from behind a stack of stacked oil drums where I had sprinted the entire way behind Lucy’s car.

"LUCY! LOOK OUT!"

Lucy ducked instinctively. The pipe whistled through the air, grazing her shoulder, but momentum carried Richard forward off balance.

Chuck didn't wait for orders. The burly mechanic vaulted over a rusted railing, crossed the concrete floor in three giant strides, and tackled Richard with the unstoppable force of a freight train crashing into a brick wall.

CRASH!

Richard hit the concrete hard, the iron pipe clattering away across the floor. Chuck pinned him instantly, pressing his knee squarely into the center of Richard’s back while snapping heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.

"That's for threatening kids on my street, pal," Chuck grunted, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead.

Sirens wailed closer, and within seconds, federal agents and paramedics flooded the warehouse. Our mother was cut free from the chair, sobbing hysterically as paramedics draped a thermal blanket over her shoulders. She looked at Lucy, her lips trembling, trying to find the words to speak.

Lucy didn't yell at her. She didn't curse her out.

She simply walked past her, pulled me into a tight, fierce hug, and looked straight at Detective Vance.

"We have everything you need right here," Lucy said calmly, holding up the black USB drive.
