Chapter 7 - THE UNEXPECTED GUESTEthan pushed the door open and stepped into the warm, sunlit lobby of the brownstone. The scent of fresh paint, polished hardwood, and vanilla candles hung in the air.

He took the elevator to the third floor, his stomach twisting into knots. When the elevator doors slid open, he saw Clara standing in the open doorway of Apartment 3A.
She had changed out of her frayed navy coat. She wore a simple cream-colored sweater and dark trousers. Her hair was pulled back neatly, and though dark circles still shadowed her eyes, there was a profound, radiant dignity about her that took his breath away.
Ethan stopped a few feet away, his hands shoved deep into his coat pockets.
“You didn't have to come here, Mr. Walker,” Clara said, her voice even, devoid of bitterness.
“I know,” Ethan replied, his gaze dropping briefly to the floor before rising to meet her eyes. “I came to apologize. Properly.”
Clara studied him for a long moment, as if searching for the cruel, calculating billionaire who had dropped a wallet like bait in the freezing snow. What she saw instead was a tired, broken man who looked remarkably human.
“An apology for what?” Clara asked quietly. “For testing me? Or for firing me fourteen years—er, fourteen months ago?”
Ethan winced. The direct hit stung, but he welcomed it.
“Both,” he admitted, stepping a little closer. “I spent my whole life believing that desperation turns everyone into a thief. I built an empire on that cynicism. When I saw you struggling at that grocery store, I wanted to prove to myself that my worldview was right. I wanted to watch you fail.”
“And when I didn't?” Clara asked, tilting her head slightly.
“It broke something inside me,” Ethan said honestly, his voice dropping to a whisper. “Your little girl looked at me with so much fury and absolute truth, and I realized... I was the one who was poor. Not you.”
Before Clara could respond, a patter of small footsteps echoed down the hallway.
Lily appeared around the corner, clutching a half-eaten gingerbread man in one hand and wearing a brand-new pink cardigan. She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw Ethan standing in the foyer.

Her bright blue eyes narrowed instantly into a suspicious glare.
“It’s the wallet man,” Lily declared, pointing a sticky finger straight at Ethan’s chest. “Mommy, is he here to take our new home back?”
