Chapter 8 - THE TRUTH COMES TO LIGHTEthan’s chest tightened. He crouched down slowly, coming down to Lily’s eye level, ignoring the expensive fabric of his trousers brushing against the clean hardwood floor.

“No, Lily,” Ethan said softly, his voice gentle in a way he hadn't used since he was a small boy himself. “I’m not here to take anything back. In fact, I’m here to ask your forgiveness.”

Lily blinked, her tiny brow furrowing in confusion. “Forgiveness for what?”

“For being a grumpy, foolish man who didn't understand how strong your mommy is,” Ethan said, offering a small, self-deprecating smile. “I played a very silly trick on her yesterday. And she showed me what true honor looks like.”

Lily looked from Ethan to her mother, weighing the apology in her five-year-old mind with absolute, uncompromising seriousness.

“Are you going to be nice now?” Lily asked, tilting her head.

“I promise you,” Ethan said, looking directly into her bright eyes. “I am going to try my absolute hardest to be.”

Clara watched the interaction, a soft, involuntary smile breaking across her face. The defensive wall around her heart finally crumbled. She reached out and placed a gentle hand on Lily’s shoulder.

“It’s okay, sweetie. Grown-ups make mistakes sometimes. Mr. Walker just learned a very important lesson today.”

Ethan stood up slowly, looking at Clara. The heavy, suffocating weight that had pressed down on his chest since Christmas Eve finally began to lift.

“Come inside,” Clara said softly, stepping aside. “I’m making hot chocolate. Real hot chocolate, not the cheap instant packets.”

May you like

Ethan hesitated, then nodded. “I’d like that very much.”

As he stepped across the threshold of Apartment 3A, the heavy glass door clicked shut behind him, sealing out the cold Manhattan winter and ushering in a warmth he hadn't felt in thirty years.
