Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT AUDIT OF THE PAST

The storm outside lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Long Island estate, mirroring the hurricane tearing through the east parlor.
Celeste realized she was losing control of the narrative. For two years, she had positioned herself as the undisputed queen-in-waiting of the Sterling dynasty. She had endured Nolan’s emotional coldness, his obsession with work, and his icy detachment, believing that marriage to him was the ultimate prize in New York society. Now, a nameless cleaner and a toddler in a yellow dress were threatening to dismantle her entire empire in a single evening.
"This is a setup!" Celeste screamed, marching toward the doorway where Marcus, the head estate manager, stood frozen in shock. "Marcus! Call security immediately! Have these two vagrants hauled off the property and dropped at the nearest county jail!"
"Touch them, and you’ll never set foot in a Sterling property again as long as you live," Nolan said, not even turning around.
Marcus stopped dead in his tracks, his hand hovering over his radio. He looked at Celeste, then at Nolan, and wisely took a step back into the shadow of the hallway. In the Sterling household, Nolan’s word was absolute law.
Nolan turned back to Mae, who was still kneeling, shielding Nora with her body.
"Stand up, Mae," Nolan commanded, extending a hand down to her calloused palm.
Mae hesitated, her eyes darting to his hand. The contrast was stark: his hand, smooth, manicured, adorned with a platinum signet ring; hers, rough from scrubbing floors, stained with the indelible marks of honest, grinding poverty. Slowly, cautiously, she placed her fingertips in his.
The moment their skin touched, a visible shudder ran through Nolan’s frame. The memories of that stormy winter night four years ago flooded back—the private suite upstairs, the exhaustion of a hostile takeover bid, the mysterious temporary worker who had slipped into his private study to deliver a rejected portfolio, and the unexpected, passionate collision of two completely different worlds in the dark hours before dawn. He had searched for her the next morning, but she had vanished without a trace, leaving behind only a gold earring on the Persian rug.
An earring that Nolan had kept locked in his office safe ever since.

Nolan reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone, and dialed a direct, encrypted number.
"David? Cancel my morning meetings in Manhattan," Nolan ordered coldly. "And bring the portable DNA-sequencing kit from the private medical vault down to the Long Island estate immediately. Do not ask questions. Just do it."
