Chapter 5 - THE CONVERGENCE OF SECRETS

The thirty minutes ticked by like hours.
In the private laboratory corner of the parlor, the bio-sequencer beeped twice—a crisp, high-pitched chime that signaled the completion of the genetic match. David stared at the monitor, his eyebrows lifting in absolute astonishment. He turned toward Nolan, holding a printed tablet.
Nolan didn't move away from Mae and Nora. He kept his arm resting on the back of the settee, standing guard over them.
"Well?" Nolan demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous register.
David swallowed hard. "Mr. Sterling... the DNA profile is a ninety-nine point nine-nine percent match. She is your biological daughter."
The words hung in the air, dense and final.
Mae closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath of defeat and relief. The secret she had guarded with her life, the ghost she had run from across state lines, was now an established, undeniable fact etched into the digital readout of a genetic sequencer.
Nolan slowly turned his head to look at Mae. The gray eyes that had terrorized corporate boardrooms and broken billionaire rivals were shimmering with unshed tears.
"Three years and four months," Nolan repeated, his voice barely audible. "You kept her hidden from me for three years, Mae."
"I had to," Mae opened her eyes, looking straight back at him with fierce, defensive pride. "If I had told you, your world would have devoured us. Celeste would have destroyed us before we even walked out of the hotel. You don't know the kind of sharks swimming in your circles, Nolan."
"They aren't sharks anymore," Nolan said, standing up and towering over the room with absolute authority. "They are prey. From this moment on, no one touches my daughter. No one touches you."
Before Mae could reply, the heavy oak doors of the parlor burst open.
Marcus rushed in, looking pale and thoroughly shaken, clutching his tablet in his hands.
"Mr. Sterling—you need to see this immediately," Marcus panted, struggling to catch his breath. "The press... they already know."

Nolan’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure ice. "Explain."
"Miss Vance didn't go back to Manhattan," Marcus stammered. "She went straight to the offices of the New York Chronicle. She leaked security camera footage from the estate gates showing Mae and the child arriving tonight. The headlines are already dropping online: Sterling’s Secret Heir: Billionaire Harboring Mystery Woman and Child in Long Island Estate."
