Chapter 7 - THE TOWER OF POWER

The grand ballroom of Sterling Tower in Manhattan was packed to absolute capacity. Hundreds of journalists, photographers, and camera crews shouted over one another, their flashes creating a blinding wall of white light that illuminated the towering glass windows overlooking Central Park.
At the center of the mahogany stage stood Nolan Sterling.
He wore a bespoke charcoal suit, his expression carved from stone. To his left stood Mae Harper, dressed in a simple, elegant navy dress that Nolan had had his personal stylist rush-deliver to the estate at dawn. She looked composed, her chin held high despite the overwhelming sea of cameras. In Nolan’s arms sat Nora, clutching a small stuffed bear and looking curiously at the flashing lights.
The microphone feedback hummed loudly, silencing the roaring crowd in an instant.
Nolan stepped up to the podium. His gray eyes swept across the room, locking onto the front row where reporters from the New York Chronicle and Financial Times sat anxiously.
"Good morning," Nolan began, his deep, resonant voice cutting through the silence like steel. "I called this press conference not to address rumors, but to establish facts."
He paused, letting the heavy weight of his gaze settle over the room.
"Four years ago, I met an extraordinary woman. Last night, I discovered that she gave birth to my daughter, Nora. Genetic testing has confirmed, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that Nora is my flesh and blood, and Mae Harper is the mother of my child."
A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom, followed immediately by an explosion of rapid-fire shutter clicks and shouting questions.
"Mr. Sterling! Is this an extortion scheme?"
"Will you be stepping down as CEO?"
"Are you planning to marry her?"
Nolan raised a single hand, and the room instantly fell silent. The sheer authority radiating from him commanded absolute obedience.
"Any publication, journalist, or individual who suggests that Miss Harper engaged in extortion or illicit behavior will face immediate, catastrophic legal and financial ruin," Nolan said, his voice dropping into a chilling, lethal register. "Furthermore, effective immediately, Nora Sterling is recognized as a primary legal heir to the Sterling family trust. And as for Miss Harper..."

Nolan turned his head, looking directly at Mae on the stage. A rare, genuine smile touched the corners of his mouth.
"...she is no longer running. Because starting today, she stands beside me."
