Chapter 10 - The Ultimate CheckmateHigh above the Manhattan streets, the evening breeze carried the faint hum of city traffic.

Damiano stepped out onto the wide stone balcony of his third-floor study, a cup of black coffee in his hand. The city lights twinkled like a sea of diamonds against the dark October sky. Below him, in the private courtyard garden, he could hear Maya’s joyful laughter as she chased a stray butterfly through the rosebushes, with Rafael watching from the shadows like a faithful hound.

For the first time in his life, Damiano felt a profound sense of peace. The war was over. The ghosts of his past were buried deep.

Clink.

The sound was faint—barely audible over the distant siren—but to a man who had survived decades of assassination attempts, it was a thunderclap.

The distinct metallic ring of a rifle bolt sliding home.

Damiano didn't hesitate. Instinct born of a thousand near-death experiences took over. He dropped his coffee cup, the ceramic shattering against the stone tiles as he lunged sideways into the doorway just as a high-velocity bullet punched a jagged hole through the stone balustrade where his heart had been a fraction of a second before.

Crack! The supersonic report of the sniper rifle echoed across the courtyard a second later.

Down in the garden, Rafael’s voice roared through the comm-link: "Sniper! Sector Three! South alley!"

Within three seconds, the estate’s automated defense grid flared to life. Floodlights swept the dark alleyway outside the perimeter walls, blinding the shooter in the Mercedes. At the same time, two armored Verrone SUVs tore out of the side garage, their tires squealing as they cut off both ends of the alley in a textbook tactical pincer maneuver.

Marcus Vance lowered his rifle in horror as his car doors were wrenched open by four of Rafael’s heavily armed enforcers.

"Get out! Hands on the roof! Now!" Rafael barked, dragging Marcus out by his collar and slamming him against the hood of the Mercedes.

Up on the balcony, Damiano brushed a speck of stone dust from his shoulder. His expression wasn't angry; it was terrifyingly calm. He walked back inside, picked up his encrypted satellite phone from the desk, and dialed a direct extension.

"Rafael," Damiano said quietly into the receiver.

"Boss! We got the shooter. It's Marcus Vance. Want me to drop him in the river?"

May you like

Damiano looked through the Georgian window down at Maya, who was safely being carried inside by Clara away from the commotion. He took a slow breath, feeling the absolute, unshakeable power of a king who ruled not by fear, but by absolute protection.

"No, Rafael," Damiano replied, his voice a low, chilling whisper. "Don't kill him. Bring him to the basement. Tell him I want to show him what happens when someone tries to steal my family's favorite day."
