Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the MachineDeep beneath the floorboards, in the hyper-secure server room where the Verrone syndicate mirrored its global financial empire, a lone figure sat before a wall of glowing monitors.

It wasn't a mercenary. It was a young woman with short, bleached-blonde hair, wearing an oversized black hoodie and chewing furiously on a piece of cinnamon gum. Her fingers flew across three mechanical keyboards simultaneously, lines of green code cascading down the screens like a digital waterfall.

Her name was Chloe—codenamed Glitch. She was the best grey-hat hacker money could buy, though Damiano didn't pay her in money; he paid her in rare Japanese arcade cabinets and total immunity from Interpol.

Access denied, a red prompt flashed on her main screen.

"Nice try, corporate scum," Chloe muttered, her fingers dancing faster. "You think routing through a Zurich proxy is going to save your offshore shell companies?"

On the secondary monitor, a security feed showed Viktor Vance's tech specialist upstairs trying to execute a master override sequence. If that sequence completed, all of Damiano's encrypted assets—and more importantly, the evidence linking the other four families to decades of money laundering—would be wiped clean, leaving Damiano holding the bag for every crime in Manhattan.

"Let's play a game of chicken," Chloe grinned, executing a counter-payload she had spent three months writing.

She didn't just block the wipe; she reversed the data stream. She redirected the virus straight back into the attacker's mobile command unit parked in the alley outside the estate.

BZZZZT.

Above her, in the courtyard, the primary communications van belonging to Viktor’s strike team began to smoke. Sparks showered from its satellite dish as internal circuits melted under a massive spike of feedback voltage.

"Gotcha," Chloe whispered, hitting enter.

Suddenly, every screen in the mansion—including the smart-displays in the grand hall—flickered off and flashed a single image: a hand-drawn, crayon red heart on a piece of folded construction paper.

And underneath it, flashing in bold red text: TRAPPED.
