Chapter 7 - The Long Night FadesBy 3:00 AM, the forensic cleanup crews had arrived.

The blood on the marble was scrubbed away, the shattered stained-glass windows covered with heavy tarps, and the terrified guests escorted out through the back gates under strict non-disclosure threats backed by the full weight of the Verrone syndicate.

The grand hall was quiet once more, save for the faint crackling of the fireplace.

Damiano stood alone by the Georgian windows, staring out at the rain-slicked streets of the Upper East Side. The art fundraiser was ruined. His favorite suit was ruined. His illusion of peaceful semi-retirement was completely shattered.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the crumpled piece of construction paper. The red crayon heart stared back at him.

Footsteps echoed softly behind him.

He didn't need to turn around to know who it was. The scent of cheap strawberry soap and laundry detergent gave her away before she even spoke.

"Mr. Verrone?"

Damiano turned. Clara stood at the edge of the room holding Maya’s hand. The little girl looked sleepy, her eyes heavy, clutching a half-eaten pint of vanilla ice cream Rafael had smuggled from the walk-in freezer.

"Is the bad noise gone?" Maya asked softly, her thumb tucked into the corner of her mouth.

Damiano walked over, kneeling down once more on the polished floor. The cold, ruthless mafia king vanished, replaced by a man who understood the heavy price of survival.

"The noise is gone, Maya," Damiano said, his voice unusually gentle. "The bad men are never coming back."

Maya stared at him for a long moment, then reached up and touched the small, faint scar running along Damiano’s cheekbone. "You look like a superhero," she whispered seriously. "Even if your suit is messy."

Damiano let out a low, genuine chuckle—the first one he had allowed himself in years. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, heavy brass object: a custom-engraved pocket watch bearing the Verrone family crest, studded with small diamonds.

He placed it gently into Maya's tiny palm, closing her fingers over it.

"A borrowed daddy has to leave a deposit," Damiano said quietly. "Keep this safe for me. It means you have a friend in this city who will never let anyone hurt you."

Clara looked down at her daughter, tears shining in her eyes, before looking up at Damiano with profound, wordless gratitude. "Thank you, Mr. Verrone. For everything. We'll pack our things and leave by morning—"

"You're not going anywhere, Clara," Damiano interrupted, standing up to his full height. "My estate needs a head housekeeper who can handle federal agents and security breaches without spilling her coffee. And..." He glanced down at Maya, who was already yawning against her mother's leg. "...my dining room table is far too big for just one person."
