Chapter 3 - DEAD MEN TALKMy breath caught in my throat. The world stopped.

“D-Dad?” I whispered, my voice barely audible over the roaring hiss of the SUV’s punctured radiator.

David Lin was supposed to be dead. I had attended his funeral six years ago. I had held my mother’s hand as his casket was lowered into the soil after an explosive industrial accident at Eric’s research plant.

“There’s no time, Maya!” my father barked, his eyes darting frantically down the street. He didn't look like the gentle, quiet engineer I remembered. His face was scarred along the jawline, his eyes hardened like flint. “Evelyn Vance isn’t working alone! The squad car that took Eric away? It wasn't driving him to the county jail! It’s taking him to a private airfield!”

Prosecutor Vance scrambled backward on the pavement, bleeding from a cut on her forehead, her cool composure shattered. “David… you’re a ghost… you died in the lab—”

POP!

A single suppressed shot struck the pavement an inch from Vance’s knee, shattering the concrete into dust. Vance shrieked and threw her hands over her head.

“Next one goes through your kneecap, Evelyn,” David cold-bloodedly warned. He turned back to us. “Elena, Leo, Maya—get Kevin into the back of the SUV NOW!”

We didn’t hesitate. Instinct took over. I scooped Kevin into my arms, his small body trembling as he clung to me, and scrambled into the leather backseat of the armored SUV. Leo shoved Elena in next and slammed the heavy door shut. David leaped into the driver’s seat, threw the vehicle into reverse, and slammed on the accelerator.

Tires squealed against the asphalt as we backed out of the neighborhood, leaving the wreck of Vance’s car and the flashing lights of approaching sirens behind us.

Inside the SUV, the silence was deafening.

Elena sat huddled in the corner, staring at her long-dead husband with a mix of terror and profound betrayal. “David… how… how are you alive? You left us. You let Eric take over our lives! You let him marry me! You let him hurt Kevin!”

David met her glare in the rearview mirror, his face tight with pain. “I had no choice, Elena! The explosion at the lab was Eric’s attempt to assassinate me. I survived, but I was severely burned. If Eric knew I was alive, he would have killed you and Maya that very night. I had to go dark to build a network to tear his syndicate down from the inside!”

“By letting him abuse our daughter and grandson?!” Elena screamed, her voice cracking with fury.

“I didn’t know he took Kevin until three hours ago!” David shouted back, his hands gripping the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned white. “I had an informant inside Eric’s inner circle. The moment I heard Eric had put Kevin in that crate to trigger the biometric sequence, I broke cover!”

I reached down, holding Kevin close. “Dad… what is this biometric key? Why does Eric want it so badly?”

David’s face softened slightly as he looked at me through the mirror. “It isn’t just thirty million dollars, Maya. That was a lie Eric spread to keep his investors quiet. The data encoded in Kevin’s DNA isn’t money. It’s the source code for an autonomous AI defense system called Project Aegis—a weapon system capable of overriding satellite defense networks globally. Eric auctioned off the access keys to foreign buyers for two hundred million dollars. The transaction closes tonight at midnight.”

My jaw dropped. The scale of the conspiracy was staggering. My innocent, four-year-old boy was carrying a global key inside his blood.

Suddenly, the console display in the SUV lit up red. A loud, high-pitched diagnostic chime began to echo inside the cabin.

WARNING: EXTERNAL FREQUENCY OVERRIDE DETECTED.

Kevin suddenly gasped, clutching his left leg. The black tracker around his ankle began to glow a violent, searing red. The temperature of the device was spiking rapidly!

“Dad! It’s burning him!” I screamed, desperately trying to slip my fingers under the strap, but the metal was scorching hot. Kevin began to cry in agony.

David looked at the dashboard screen, his face turning pale. “He activated the remote thermal overload… Eric is overriding the tracker from his device! If we don’t remove it in two minutes, it will burn through the bone or detonate the micro-charge inside it!”

HOOK / CLIFFHANGER:

David pulled the SUV onto the shoulder of a dark, deserted industrial bridge over the river. He grabbed a heavy wire cutter from under his seat and turned to the back.

“Maya, hold him down! I have to cut it off!”

Just as the blades of the cutter touched the glowing band, a red laser sight painted a bright dot directly onto the center of my father’s forehead.

A voice boomed over a helicopter loudspeaker above us: “Drop the tool, David. Or your son-in-law dies first.”
