Chapter 7 - THE GHOST IN THE ROOMMy blood turned to liquid ice.

“What do you mean, an exact biological match?” I demanded, standing up from the plastic chair beside Kevin’s hospital bed. “That’s impossible! I gave birth to Kevin four years ago at St. Jude’s Hospital! There was no other baby!”

The doctor, a gray-haired federal geneticist named Dr. Chen, adjusted his glasses, his expression turning grave. He tapped the touch screen, bringing up two side-by-side DNA sequencing graphs.

“Look at the markers, Ms. Lin,” Dr. Chen said, pointing a surgical tool at the screen. “The biometric code requires two synchronized biological nodes to execute full decryption. It’s a dual-key system—like two keys required to turn a nuclear launch lock. Key A was embedded in Kevin. But Key B… Key B has been active and transmitting data for the last forty-eight hours.”

“Transmitting to where?!” I gasped, terror surging back into my veins.

Before Dr. Chen could answer, the electronic lock on the medical room door chimed. The heavy steel door slid open.

Agent Gable stepped inside, her face unusually pale, her radio unit crackling with frantic, static-heavy transmissions.

“Maya,” Gable said, her voice shaking slightly—a terrifying sight for a seasoned FBI agent. “We have a breach in the lower subterranean level of the facility.”

“What kind of breach? Is Eric here? Did his men break in?!”

“No,” Gable whispered, locking the door behind her and pulling her sidearm from its holster. “Not Eric. Eric was just the decoy, Maya. He thought he was the mastermind, but he was being played from the very beginning.”

“By who?!”

“By the person who actually paid off Prosecutor Vance. By the person who financed your father’s lab six years ago,” Gable said, her eyes fixed on the door’s reinforced glass window. “The real head of the syndicate… your mother.”

My mind shattered. The room seemed to spin out of control.

“My… my mother?” I choked out a laugh—a frantic, hysterical sound. “Are you crazy?! Elena has been abused for three years! She was terrified! She gave you the recordings!”

“She gave us the recordings because she needed Eric out of the picture so she could collect the complete Aegis code herself!” Gable explained rapidly, stepping toward the bed to shield Kevin. “Elena didn't record Eric to save Kevin, Maya. She recorded him to frame him! She’s the one who gave David the genetic sequencing technology four years ago!”

Suddenly, the overhead fluorescent lights flickered twice and died, plunging the room into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

The emergency red backup lights hummed to life, casting an eerie, crimson glow across the room.

BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.

The digital lock on the heavy steel door hummed. The green indicator light turned red.

The door slowly, silently slid open.

Standing in the doorway, framed by the red light of the corridor, was my mother, Elena.

She wasn't shaking. She wasn't wearing her shock blanket. She held a sleek, silenced silver pistol in her hand, dressed in a black leather coat. Standing right beside her was a four-year-old boy, dressed in identical clothes to Kevin, holding her hand silently.

The boy had Kevin’s eyes. Kevin’s hair. Kevin’s face.

A identical twin brother I was told had died at birth.

Elena looked at me, a cold, elegant, and chilling smile gracing her lips.

“Hello, Maya,” my mother said smoothly, pointing the gun at Agent Gable’s chest. “It’s time to complete the family legacy.”
