Chapter 2 - THE ICU CONSPIRACYThe emergency room at Saint Jude Medical Center was a chaotic blur of flashing monitors, shouting doctors, and the incessant hum of IV pumps. Because of my recent abdominal surgery, Daniel’s brutal attack had caused severe internal bleeding. I was rushed into emergency surgery to repair the torn stitches.

When I finally woke up six hours later, the room was bathed in the dim blue light of the monitors. Standing at the foot of my bed was Dr. Emily Parker, still in her blood-stained scrubs, accompanied by a tall man in a tailored dark suit.
“Madison, I’m glad you’re awake,” Dr. Parker said softly, checking my vitals. “This is Detective Thomas Vance. No relation to you, but he’s leading the investigation into your stepbrother.”
Detective Vance stepped closer, his expression grim. “Ms. Vance, we processed the manila envelope you gave Officer Brooks. The medical examiner who signed Arthur Carter’s death certificate eighteen months ago just had his license revoked in another state for falsifying toxicology reports. We’ve reopened Arthur’s death investigation.”
I swallowed hard, my throat raw. “And my mother? Eleanor?”
Detective Vance leaned in, dropping his voice to a whisper. “We tracked her passport. Eleanor Vance never boarded that flight to Switzerland three weeks ago. Her phone was pinging from a remote cabin in the Blackhand Gorge area—a property registered under a shell company owned by Daniel Carter.”
A cold dread pooled in my stomach. “He took her. He’s been holding her hostage to force her to sign over the Carter estate!”
“It’s worse than that,” Detective Vance replied, pulling a tablet from his briefcase. “An hour ago, Daniel’s attorney paid his $250,000 bail. He’s already out.”
My heart rate spiked, causing the monitors to beep frantically. “Out?! He tried to kill me in front of doctor!”
“Money talks, Ms. Vance. His lawyers claimed he suffered a severe psychiatric episode brought on by stress,” Dr. Parker explained angrily. “However, I refused to discharge you. You are safe in this ICU unit. We have armed hospital security at your door.”
Suddenly, the lights in the ICU flickered once, twice, and then plunged into complete darkness.
The steady hum of the life support machines cut out, replaced by screeching backup generator alarms. Red emergency lights bathed the hallway in an eerie, blood-like glow.
Outside my door, a loud thud echoed through the corridor, followed by the sound of a heavy body hitting the wall.
“Detective!” Dr. Parker gasped.
Detective Vance drew his sidearm, stepping swiftly toward the heavy glass door. Through the tinted window, I saw the two hospital security guards lying unconscious on the floor. Standing over them was a man in dark medical scrubs, holding a syringe filled with a clear liquid.
He raised his head. It wasn't a stranger.

It was Daniel’s personal assistant, Julian—a man who had been working side-by-side with my stepbrother for five years.
“Madison!” Julian slammed his weight against the glass door, his eyes wide and unhinged. “You should have stayed quiet! Daniel sends his regards!”
