Chapter 2 - The House of Cards CollapsesVictoria’s legs finally gave out.

She dropped to her knees on the expensive imported deck, her designer white linen dress staining instantly with spilled cocktail syrup and dust. The microphone slipped from her fingers, clattering loudly against the wood, emitting a piercing, high-pitched feedback squeal that made everyone wince.

"No... no, this isn't happening," Victoria muttered, clutching her head as her perfectly styled hair began to unravel in the humid coastal air. She looked up at me, her eyes wide with a manic, desperate fury. "Mark! Mark, tell them! Tell them she's lying! She’s just a broken-down veteran living off your pity! She doesn't have authority over the police! She’s nothing!"

Mark slowly stepped forward, shielding me from her unhinged gaze. The transformation in him was terrifying. The gentle, accommodating man Victoria thought she knew had completely vanished, replaced by the ruthless corporate titan who controlled half the city’s real estate infrastructure.

"Shut up, Victoria," Mark said, his voice completely devoid of emotion. It was the tone he used right before executing a hostile corporate takeover. "For five years, I let you play your little games because I thought you were harmless. I let you mock my wife. I let you throw these pathetic displays of wealth to feed your fragile ego. But you crossed a red line today."

"Your wife?" Victoria shrieked, the mask completely shattering. "She's a liability! Look at her body! Look at what she's hiding! She's scarred, Mark! She's a crippled soldier living in the shadow of a medal!"

Chief Miller stepped between Victoria and us, his hand resting firmly on the butt of his sidearm. "Watch your tongue, Ms. Vance. You are speaking to Captain Elena Vance-Sterling, senior tactical advisor to the Department of Homeland Security and the recipient of the City’s Highest Medal of Valor."

The silence that followed was deafening.

The socialites who had been laughing at me moments ago now pressed themselves against the back walls of the club, desperately trying to make themselves as small as possible. Several high-profile CEOs quietly dropped their champagne flutes, realizing that associating with Victoria Vance was now a one-way ticket to prison.

"Chief," I said, stepping past Mark. My voice cut through the heavy air like a scalpel. "Process the guards. Check their comms. They weren't just providing security for a beach party. Look at the coordinates on their encrypted earpieces."

Chief Miller nodded briskly. "Already on it, Captain. Federal cyber-units have locked down the perimeter. No one leaves this beach until every single device is scrubbed and indexed."

As two officers hauled Mercer away, another officer stepped forward with a second pair of gleaming steel cuffs.

Victoria looked down at the metal, then up at me. Realization finally dawned on her—not just that she was losing her freedom, but that she had engineered her own absolute, public destruction.
