Chapter 9 - The Aftermath and the New DawnThree days later, the front pages of every major newspaper across the country displayed the definitive fall of the Vance empire.

“LOCAL SOCIALITE ARRESTED IN INTERNATIONAL ARMS RING: HERO VETERAN UNCOVERS MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR SYNDICATE,” screamed the headlines in bold, block letters.

Victoria Vance was currently sitting in a maximum-security federal holding facility, facing multiple life sentences for money laundering, conspiracy, and aiding a known terrorist organization. Her lavish beach club had been seized by the government, her assets frozen, and her inner circle of fair-weather friends scattered to the winds, too terrified of federal scrutiny to even mention her name in public.

Mark and I stood on the private balcony of our penthouse apartment, watching the morning sun rise over the city skyline. The harbor gleamed in the distance, peaceful, secure, and free of the shadows that had threatened it for so long.

The doorbell chimed softly.

Mark went to answer it, returning a moment later holding a crisp, official government envelope stamped with the Department of Homeland Security seal.

"For you," Mark said, handing it to me with a knowing smile.

I broke the seal and slid out thick, heavy cardstock. It wasn't a recall to active duty, nor was it a tactical directive. It was an official commendation from the Office of the Mayor, accompanied by an invitation to the city's annual Founders' Gala—an event where I had once stood as a quiet, scarred outsider hiding behind a soldier's past.

"Are we going?" Mark asked, wrapping his arms around me from behind, resting his chin gently on my shoulder.

I looked at the reflection of the jagged scar on my ribs in the glass balcony door. It wasn't a monstrosity, and it wasn't a flaw to be hidden behind designer cover-ups or expensive shawls. It was a badge of honor—a permanent reminder of resilience, strength, and survival.

I folded the letter, turned around in my husband's arms, and smiled.

"Only if I get to wear whatever the hell I want."
