Chapter 8 - Echoes in the DarkIt was a rainy Tuesday evening when I saw him again.

I was stepping out of a high-end restaurant downtown after a successful dinner meeting with international investors. The rain was slicking the pavement, reflecting the neon signs of the city in shimmering ribbons of color.
Standing near the alleyway across the street, shivering in a cheap, wet trench coat, was Daniel.
He looked older, his hair graying prematurely at the temples, his posture completely broken. He was holding a takeout coffee cup, staring blankly at the ground until his eyes drifted across the street and locked onto me.
For a second, time froze.
He saw my tailored white designer coat, the expensive silk umbrella held by my driver, and the gleaming black luxury sedan waiting at the curb for me. He saw the absolute, unshakable confidence in my eyes—the exact opposite of the frightened, bleeding woman he had screamed at in the foyer months ago.
Daniel took a hesitant step forward off the curb, lifting a hand as if to call out my name, as if to beg for a second chance, a crumb of mercy from the empire he had tried to destroy.
I didn't flinch. I didn't look away.

I simply held his gaze for three long, agonizing seconds. Then, with absolute indifference, I turned my head, stepped into the warm leather interior of my car, and the door clicked shut, sealing him out of my world forever.
My driver pulled away into the rainy night, leaving Daniel standing alone in the shadows of the streetlights.
