Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Takeover (The Shocking Twist)

Three months later.
The press conference at the Pierre Hotel was packed to capacity. Every major financial outlet in the world was there.
Nathan Pierce stood at the podium, looking relaxed, dressed in a simple dark suit without his usual signature platinum watch. Sitting in the front row, holding hands, were Rebecca and Lily—the latter wearing her pink backpack, now adorned with a tiny gold key to the city.
"Thank you all for coming," Nathan said into the microphone. "Three months ago, this company was on the verge of a historic merger. A merger that would have made me one of the wealthiest men in the country. But it also would have cost me the only things that actually matter."
He paused, looking directly at Rebecca, who smiled back, her eyes bright with tears of pride.
"Effective today, I am stepping down as CEO of Pierce Investments," Nathan announced.
A collective gasp echoed through the room. Cameras flashed in a blinding frenzy.
"I am handing over executive control to my CFO, Marcus Vance. My shares will be placed into a blind trust, with 50% of the annual dividends permanently redirected to the Mitchell-Pierce Foundation, a new organization dedicated to providing housing, job placement, and legal protection for single parents affected by corporate restructuring."
He stepped away from the podium, ignoring the shouting journalists, and walked down the steps. He took Rebecca’s hand, lifted Lily into his arms, and walked out of the hall, leaving the corporate world behind him.
Later that evening, the family of three sat on the deck of a modest, beautiful lake house in upstate New York. The Hudson lay far behind them. Lily was down by the water, skipping stones under the watchful eye of a security guard.
Nathan stood behind Rebecca, wrapping his arms around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder.
"You really did it," she whispered, leaning back against his chest. "You gave up your empire."
"I didn't give it up," Nathan murmured, kissing her cheek. "I traded it for a better one."
Suddenly, Nathan’s phone buzzed in his pocket. He sighed, pulling it out. It was a private, restricted number.
He answered it. "I told you, Marcus, I'm retired."
"Nathan..." Marcus's voice was trembling, but not with fear. With a strange, dark amusement. "You need to open the email I just sent you."
"Marcus, I don't care about the market—"
"It's not about the market, Nathan. It's about the DNA test. The one Victoria threatened to leak. The one we ran to prove Lily was yours for the custody filing."
Nathan’s grip on the phone tightened. "What about it? We proved she's mine. The blue eyes, the match—"
"No, Nathan," Marcus whispered, his voice sending a sudden, icy chill down Nathan's spine. "We ran the test against your DNA. But the laboratory just called me back with the secondary analysis. They didn't just test your markers. They ran them against the national database because of a rare genetic anomaly Lily possesses."
Nathan felt the world tilt. "And?"
"Lily isn't your daughter, Nathan," Marcus said, his voice barely audible over the phone. "She’s your sister. Your father's secret child. Rebecca didn't run away because she was pregnant with your baby. She ran away because your father paid her five million dollars to hide his affair—and she used you to make the child legitimate so she would never be hunted by your family's lawyers."
Nathan slowly lowered the phone.
He looked out toward the lake.
Lily was laughing, skipping a stone across the glassy water.

And beside him, Rebecca was smiling, her eyes—those beautiful, calculated, ice-blue eyes—shining with a secret she had successfully kept for six long years.
She leaned in, whispering in his ear. "Ready for dinner, Daddy?"
