Chapter 3 - THE GHOST IN THE MACHINE

The Ultimate Betrayal Revealed! The Heart-Stopping Moment the Boy's Enemy Walked Through the Door! The air in the garage grew thick with the smell of ozone, burning rubber, and pure terror. The arrival of Victor Vance changed the game entirely. Marcus Hale realized, with a sickening jolt in his stomach, that he was no longer the apex predator in the room. He was just a pawn caught between a vengeful prodigy and a cold-blooded syndicate leader.

"Victor!" Marcus yelled, holding his hands up. "Thank God. The kid has locked down the system. He’s going to detonate the engine!"

Victor didn't even look at Marcus. He gestured to one of his mercenaries. A deafening BANG echoed through the garage as a single bullet struck Marcus in the shoulder. The billionaire collapsed to the floor, gasping in agony, clutching his bleeding arm.

"Shut up, Marcus," Victor said coldly. "You've outlived your usefulness. You couldn't even figure out how to make the Chronos engine run without freezing. I had to let this little rat sniff his way out of hiding just so he could unlock the terminal for us."

Toby remained seated in the leather chair. His small fingers gripped the armrests tightly, but his face remained a mask of pure steel. "You used Marcus as bait to draw me out."

"Of course I did," Victor laughed, walking over to the roaring supercar. He looked at the cascading green code on the screen with obsessed, greedy eyes. "Your father was a genius, Toby, but he was weak. He wanted to give this technology away to the world for free. Clean energy? Infinite efficiency? What a waste. The global energy market is worth trillions. Controlled scarcity is where the real power lies."

The countdown was ticking lower. The engine's roar shifted in pitch, vibrating at a frequency that caused the overhead LED lights to flicker violently and pop, plunging the garage into a chaotic rhythm of flashing shadows.

"Disconnect the battery, boss?" the mercenary chief asked, pointing his rifle at the engine.

"Touch that engine and you'll vaporize us all instantly," Toby warned, his voice ringing clearly over the mechanical din. "My father knew Victor would try to steal it. The countdown isn't controlled by the car's computer anymore. It's linked to my pulse."

Toby lifted his left wrist. A crude, homemade biometric band was strapped tightly to his skin, blinking with a tiny green light in perfect synchronization with the car’s dashboard.

"If my heart rate drops, or if you separate me from the car by more than twenty feet, the thermite ignites instantly," Toby stated.

Victor’s smile faded. His eyes narrowed into slits as he stared at his nephew. "You're bluffing. You're just a child. You don't have the guts to die here."

"Test me," Toby whispered. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small syringe filled with a clear liquid. "This is a localized beta-blocker. One injection, and my heart rate drops below forty beats per minute. The car will think I'm dead. Do you want to see how fast we can all turn into ash, Uncle Victor?"

The mercenaries hesitated, taking a collective step back. They looked at Victor, waiting for an order, their confidence completely shattered by a grease-covered ten-year-old holding his own life hostage.

Victor’s jaw clenched. He could see the absolute lack of fear in Toby’s eyes. The kid was telling the truth. He was willing to die to avenge his father.

"Fine," Victor hissed, raising his hands. "What do you want, Toby? We can split the empire. You have your father's mind. Together, we can rule the entire automotive and energy sectors."

Toby looked at the countdown timer: ****.

"I don't want an empire, Uncle," Toby said, a strange, triumphant light shining in his eyes. "I wanted a confession. And every single word you, Marcus, and your men just said has been broadcast live to every major news network and federal agency on the planet."
