CHAPTER 2 — THE EMPTY MANSION

Valeria's eyes flew open just before noon.

A sharp headache pulsed behind her temples.

The previous night's music still echoed faintly in her memory...

The laughter...

The expensive champagne...

Her friends cheering her name...

And her mother's silent face as she walked away.

For a brief moment...

Valeria smirked.

"She'll get over it," she muttered.

"She always does."

She reached for her phone to check the dozens of notifications she expected after posting videos from the party.

The battery had died.

Annoyed, she tossed it onto the bed.

"Mom!" she called lazily.

"Coffee!"

No answer.

She frowned.

"Mom?"

Silence.

That had never happened before.

Every morning of her life...

Breakfast had been waiting downstairs.

Fresh fruit.

Hot coffee.

Warm tortillas.

Everything prepared before she even opened her eyes.

Still wearing her silk robe...

She walked into the hallway.

Something felt wrong.

The air-conditioning wasn't running.

The house seemed strangely quiet.

No footsteps.

No vacuum cleaner.

No smell of fresh coffee.

Only silence.

She descended the marble staircase.

Halfway down...

She froze.

The enormous living room...

Was almost empty.

The grand piano was gone.

The imported Italian leather sofas had disappeared.

The antique coffee tables...

Gone.

The paintings that had decorated the walls since childhood...

Gone.

Even the Persian rugs had vanished, exposing the cold marble beneath.

"What...?"

Her heartbeat accelerated.

She rushed into the dining room.

Nothing.

The twelve-seat walnut dining table...

Gone.

Crystal cabinets...

Gone.

Silverware.

Decorations.

Everything.

She ran into the kitchen.

Her panic grew.

The refrigerator doors stood open...

Completely empty.

The professional stove...

Gone.

The coffee machine...

Gone.

Only bare countertops remained.

"This isn't funny!"

she shouted.

"Mom!"

Still...

Nothing.

For the first time in years...

Fear replaced arrogance.

She sprinted upstairs and threw open Carmen's bedroom door.

The room looked as though no one had ever lived there.

Empty wardrobe.

Empty shelves.

No framed photographs.

No jewelry box.

No old letters.

Only clean white walls.

Valeria's breathing became uneven.

She searched every bedroom.

Every bathroom.

Every closet.

Every balcony.

No servants.

No security guards.

No gardener.

The mansion that had bustled with employees only yesterday now echoed with unbearable emptiness.

Then she remembered.

Her bank account.

She rushed to charge her phone, finally managing to power it on.

With trembling fingers, she opened her banking app.

The screen refreshed.

Available balance:

$184.27

Her vision blurred.

"No..."

She refreshed the page.

The same number.

Again.

The same number.

Her luxury credit cards were blocked.

Every investment account showed a zero balance.

Every supplementary card linked to her profile had been canceled.

"This has to be a mistake..."

She dialed Carmen's number.

"The number you have dialed is no longer in service."

Again.

The same message.

She called the family lawyer.

Voicemail.

She called the house manager.

Disconnected.

The accountant.

No answer.

Her breathing turned into desperate gasps.

Then she noticed something she had missed.

On the marble floor of the office...

A single cream-colored envelope rested neatly in the center of the room.

Across the front...

Written in elegant handwriting...

Were just three words.

For Valeria.

Her hands trembled as she opened it.

Inside was one handwritten letter.

No anger.

No insults.

No accusations.

Only calm words.

My daughter,

If you are reading this, it means you have finally experienced something you have never known before...

Uncertainty.

Yesterday you wished that I would disappear.

I honored your wish.

But before I left...

I made one final decision.

Everything you believed belonged to you...

Never belonged to you at all.

Every account you used...

Every credit card you carried...

Every luxury you enjoyed...

Was mine.

I never taught you the value of money because I was too busy trying to protect you from hardship.

That was my greatest mistake.

Today, for the first time in your life...

You will earn your own future.

Whether we ever see each other again...

Depends entirely on the choices you make from this day forward.

At the bottom of the page...

There was no address.

No phone number.

Only a signature.

With love, Mom.

Valeria sank onto the cold marble floor.

For the first time in twenty-two years...

There was no one coming to rescue her.

Outside...

A moving truck disappeared around the corner.

Watching from inside was Carmen.

She looked at the mansion one last time.

A single tear rolled down her cheek.

Beside her sat an older man in a tailored suit.

He quietly asked,

"Are you certain about this?"

Carmen nodded without looking back.

"If she is ever going to become the woman I know she can be..."

"She has to learn what life feels like without my shadow."

The truck continued down the road.

Neither of them noticed...

That someone else had been secretly watching the entire scene from across the street.

Someone who had been waiting years...

May you like

For the Mendoza family to fall.
