CHAPTER 5 — THE TRUTH BEGINS TO SHATTER EVERYTHING

Rain tapped softly against the bookstore windows.

Valeria stood behind the counter...

Still staring at the small envelope containing her first honest paycheck.

It wasn't enough to buy the designer shoes she once wore without a second thought.

Yet somehow...

It felt more valuable than every luxury gift she had ever received.

For the first time...

She understood the weight of money.

Not because of its amount...

But because of the effort behind it.

Mr. Hernández noticed the tears gathering in her eyes.

He smiled kindly.

"Do you know why I pay every employee in cash on their first day?"

Valeria quietly shook her head.

"So they never forget what it feels like to earn something with their own hands."

She carefully folded the bills...

Placed them inside her wallet...

And whispered,

"I'm never going to spend this."

Meanwhile...

Across the city...

Carmen sat alone in her modest apartment.

The DNA report remained on the table.

Beside it lay dozens of photographs spanning more than twenty years.

Birthday parties.

School graduations.

Christmas mornings.

Every picture showed the same thing.

A little girl smiling beside the woman who had loved her as though she had carried her herself.

A knock interrupted the silence.

The elegant woman returned...

This time carrying another file.

"I found the court records."

Carmen slowly looked up.

"So..."

"It's all there?"

The woman nodded.

"The adoption documents."

"The hospital investigation."

"And the names of everyone involved."

Carmen closed her eyes.

For twenty-two years...

She had protected a secret that only three people in the world knew.

Now...

Someone else was searching for it.

At that same moment...

Inside the black SUV...

The mysterious man received new photographs.

He smiled coldly.

"There she is."

His assistant looked over his shoulder.

"So the rumors were true."

"Carmen kept every document."

The man nodded.

"And if those papers become public..."

"The Mendoza name won't be the only thing destroyed."

He reached for his phone.

"Bring him here."

Minutes later...

A gray-haired lawyer entered the vehicle.

Without a word...

The mysterious man slid an old newspaper across the seat.

The faded headline read:

'Newborn Vanishes During Hospital Fire.'

The lawyer's face turned pale.

"I thought every copy had been destroyed."

"So did I."

The mysterious man smiled.

"But someone kept the truth alive."

The following morning...

Valeria returned to the bookstore before sunrise.

Without being asked...

She swept the sidewalk.

Organized the display window.

Made coffee for the staff.

Mr. Hernández watched quietly.

"You've changed."

Valeria gave a small smile.

"I'm trying."

Before he could answer...

A luxury black sedan stopped outside.

Everyone inside the bookstore turned toward the entrance.

A man wearing an expensive tailored suit stepped inside.

His polished shoes clicked across the wooden floor.

He looked directly at Valeria.

"Miss Mendoza?"

"Yes."

"I've been searching for you."

Her heartbeat quickened.

"Who are you?"

The man handed her an elegant business card.

Eduardo Salazar

Attorney at Law

"I represent someone who wishes to meet you."

Valeria's first thought was her mother.

"Is it Carmen?"

The lawyer hesitated.

"No."

"It's someone connected to your past."

"My past?"

"There are things about your childhood..."

"...that you were never told."

Mr. Hernández immediately stepped closer.

"If this concerns her family..."

"It can wait until she decides."

The lawyer respected the interruption.

He placed a sealed envelope on the counter.

"When you're ready..."

"Come to this address."

"You deserve the truth."

Then he quietly left.

Valeria stared at the envelope for several long seconds.

Her hands trembled.

Something deep inside told her that opening it would change her life forever.

Slowly...

She broke the seal.

Inside was only a single photograph.

An old hospital nursery.

Rows of newborn babies sleeping peacefully.

On the back...

Someone had written one sentence in faded blue ink.

"You were never supposed to leave that hospital with Carmen."

The color drained from Valeria's face.

Before she could speak...

Her phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

She answered cautiously.

"Hello?"

For several seconds...

Only breathing.

Then...

A familiar voice whispered through the speaker.

"Valeria..."

It was Carmen.

"I know you've started working."

"I'm proud of you."

Valeria burst into tears.

"Mom..."

"Please tell me where you are."

A long silence followed.

Finally...

Carmen spoke words that froze Valeria where she stood.

"I have always been your mother..."

"But I was never the woman who gave birth to you."

The line went dead.

The bookstore fell completely silent.

Valeria slowly lowered the phone.

The photograph slipped from her trembling fingers.

For twenty-two years...

She had believed her life was built on certainty.

In less than one minute...

Everything she thought she knew...

May you like

Had become a lie.

End of Chapter 5...
