Chapter 4 - The Fire This Time

The Race Against the ClockThe rain began to fall in sheets as Daniel’s black SUV tore through the industrial districts of the South Side, running red lights and mounting sidewalks. Maya sat in the passenger seat, her knuckles white as she gripped the dashboard.
"Tell me the truth, Danny," she pleaded, using his old name for the first time. "Why did you take the blame fifteen years ago?"
Daniel didn't look away from the road, his face set in stone as he pushed the engine to its absolute limit.
"Arthur Vance’s thugs set that warehouse on fire for insurance money," Daniel said, his voice raw. "My father was the night watchman. He fell asleep because of his drinking. They were going to frame him for murder because a firefighter died in that blaze. Arthur told me if I signed a confession saying I did it as an act of teenage vandalism, he’d use his influence to clear my father, give him a pension, and fund my education. If I refused... he said my father would die in prison, and you would disappear."
Maya stared at him, the fifteen years of ice around her heart beginning to crack. "You did it to protect us."
"I did it wrong," Daniel shouted, slamming his hand against the steering wheel as they skidded into the flooded lot of the abandoned 12th Street warehouse. "I thought if I became powerful enough, I could come back and protect you forever. I didn't realize that by the time I won, I would lose the only thing that mattered."
They threw the doors open, sprinting into the decaying structure. The warehouse was a cavern of rusted steel and rotted wood, water dripping from the skeletal roof.
In the center of the room, tied to a wooden chair beneath a flickering halogen work light, was Noah.
Standing over him was Victoria Vance, holding a silver lighter, her beautiful face twisted into an expression of pure, unhinged madness. Two heavy thugs stood flanking her.
"Ah, the happy family arrives," Victoria laughed, flicking the lighter open. The small flame danced in the damp air. "You ruined my family's reputation today, Daniel. Do you know what happens to the Vance stock value when a CEO accuses them of kidnapping on live television? It drops forty percent in ten minutes."
"It's over, Victoria!" Daniel yelled, stepping in front of Maya. "The police are on their way. Let the boy go. This is between us."
The Ultimate Sacrifice"It was always between us!" Victoria shrieked. "I gave you everything! My father made you a king! And you throw it all away for this? For a woman who sweeps floors?"
Victoria dropped the lighter.
She hadn't just brought a lighter. The floor around Noah's chair had been doused in industrial accelerant. The moment the flame touched the liquid, a wall of bright orange fire erupted, climbing the rusted steel pillars and trapping the five-year-old boy in a ring of deadly heat.
"Mommy!" Noah screamed, kicking his legs. "Mommy, help me!"
"Noah!" Maya screamed, trying to run forward, but one of Victoria's thugs grabbed her, pinning her arms behind her back.
Daniel didn't hesitate. He didn't look at Victoria. He didn't think about his suit, his money, or his life. He lunged forward, tackling the second thug out of the way, taking a heavy punch to the jaw that sent him crashing to the concrete.

Through the smoke and the roaring flames, Daniel saw his son.
He pulled his expensive navy wool blazer over his head, took a deep breath of the toxic air, and dove directly through the wall of fire.
