Chapter 5 - The Hidden Asset

The Aftermath in the ICUThe ICU waiting room at Chicago General Hospital smelled of bleach and cheap coffee. It was 3:00 AM.

Maya sat in a plastic chair, her clothes covered in soot, her hands wrapped around a paper cup. Noah was asleep in a room down the hall, treated for minor smoke inhalation and a few scrapes. He was safe.

But Daniel wasn't.

The doors to the emergency wing opened, and a doctor in green scrubs walked out, looking exhausted. Maya stood up so fast her chair scraped loudly against the linoleum.

"Is he... is he going to make it?" she whispered.

"Mr. Hart has second and third-degree burns across his back and arms," the doctor said gravely. "He inhaled a massive amount of smoke to keep that little boy safe. He’s stable, but he’s unconscious. The next twenty-four hours are critical."

Maya collapsed back into her seat, burying her face in her hands. She had spent fifteen years hating a man who had sacrificed his entire youth to keep her safe, and who had just walked through fire to save their child.

Just then, a man in a gray three-piece suit walked into the waiting room. It was Marcus Stone, Daniel’s personal attorney and closest confidant for the last decade. He carried a heavy leather briefcase.

"Ms. Bennett," Marcus said gently, sitting beside her. "Daniel woke up for ten seconds before they sedated him. He told me if he didn't make it through the night, I had to give you this immediately."

Marcus opened the briefcase and pulled out a thick, legal document stamped with the seal of the State of Illinois.

Maya stared at the numbers, the zeros blurring together through her tears.

"Two years ago?" she gasped. "He... he set this up two years ago?"

"Daniel found out about Noah three years ago," Marcus explained, a sad smile touching his lips. "But he knew the Vance family was watching him. He knew if he tried to contact you, Arthur Vance would use his power to destroy you and take the child to hurt Daniel. So Daniel played the long game. He pretended to agree to the merger. He pretended to agree to marry Victoria. He did it all to quietly buy back every single share of Hartwell Development from the Vance family, using shell companies."

Marcus leaned in close, his voice dropping to a whisper.

"He didn't hire you because you applied, Maya. He tracked your application. He made sure our HR department flagged your name. He wanted you close because he knew this week was the final showdown. He was going to hand you this trust tomorrow, free and clear, away from the Vances. He never stopped trying to get you out, Maya. He just had to build the fortress first."

The Final ThreatBefore Maya could absorb the sheer magnitude of Daniel’s secret sacrifice, the glass doors of the ICU slid open once more.

Two federal agents in dark suits walked in, followed by a heavily handcuffed Arthur Vance. He was being escorted to a transport vehicle, but he stopped when he saw Maya. Even in handcuffs, his eyes were venomous.

"Enjoy the money while you can, girl," Arthur hissed, leaning over the plastic partition. "My daughter Victoria is gone. She took a flight to a non-extradition country three hours ago with the remaining Vance liquid assets. And she took something else with her. Something Daniel stole from us fifteen years ago. The real reason his father died."

Maya stood up, her voice steady. "My father died of a heart attack, you monster."

"Is that what they told you?" Arthur laughed, a chilling sound that echoed through the sterile hospital wing. "Ask Daniel about the ledger from fifteen years ago when he wakes up. If he wakes up. Because my daughter isn't just running, Maya. She’s coming back to finish what I started."
