CHAPTER 3: The Ghost’s Ledger and the Subway Chase

The gunshot was deafening in the enclosed concrete space of the warehouse.

The mercenary Richard targeted crumpled to the ground, clutching his shattered collarbone. Richard grabbed Tommy by the collar of his jacket and lunged behind a massive concrete pillar just as a hail of automatic gunfire tore through the air, pulverizing the cardboard walls of Tommy’s former home.

"Run, Tommy! Down the fire escape!" Richard roared, firing three blind shots back into the darkness to keep Marcus and his men pinned down.

"But what about Sophia?!" Tommy cried, tears streaming down his face.

"I’ll get her! Run!"

Tommy didn't hesitate. He scrambled through a broken window onto the rusted fire escape, disappearing into the torrential rain.

Richard checked his magazine. Three rounds left. He couldn't win a shootout against professional mercenaries. He needed to get to the SUV, rescue Sophia, and get out of there.

He ran in the opposite direction, leaping over piles of debris. Behind him, he heard Marcus yelling orders: "Don't let him reach the car! Kill the boy if you have to, but get that drive!"

Richard burst through the warehouse's main entrance into the freezing night air. He charged toward his SUV.

To his horror, the driver-side door was wide open. Inside, the dashboard lights were smashed, and the portable incubator containing Sophia was gone.

"Looking for this, Richard?"

Julian Vance stepped out from behind a parked black van fifty yards away. In his arms, he held the portable incubator. Next to him stood another mercenary, holding a gun to the glass container.

"Julian!" Richard roared, his voice cracking with rage. "She's a baby! She has nothing to do with this!"

"She has everything to do with this," Julian sneered, his handsome face twisted into a mask of pure arrogance. "Her mother almost ruined fifteen years of planning. Elena was smart, but she underestimated how easy it is to make a person disappear. And now, you’ve brought me the final pieces of the puzzle: the decryption key, and the boy who knows the password."

Julian looked up at the sky, letting the rain wash over his face. "Give me the drive, Richard. Or I tell my man to turn off the oxygen right now."

Richard stood in the pouring rain, his heart breaking. He had spent his entire life building an empire, believing he was a king. But in reality, he had been a blind fool, playing right into the hands of a monster.

Suddenly, a loud, screeching sound echoed from the nearby subway grate.

Tommy.

The boy had not run away. He had climbed down the fire escape and was now standing on top of the ventilation grate directly behind Julian’s mercenary. In his small hands, he held a heavy, rusted iron pipe he had scavenged from the tracks.

Before anyone could react, Tommy slammed the pipe with all his might into the back of the mercenary's knees.

The mercenary screamed, buckling to the ground. The gun went flying.

"Now, Richard!" Tommy screamed.

Richard didn't waste a millisecond. He lunged forward, tackling Julian to the wet asphalt. The incubator slipped from Julian’s arms, sliding across the slick pavement. Richard caught it with one arm, shielding it with his body as they hit the ground.

Julian scrambled to his feet, pulling a compact pistol from his coat. "You fool! You've ruined us both!"

"No," Richard growled, scrambling backward toward the open subway entrance stairwell. "I just woke up."

With Sophia secure in his left arm and his gun in his right, Richard grabbed Tommy’s hand as the boy leaped off the grate. Together, they plunged down the dark, concrete steps into the Manhattan subway system, leaving Julian screaming in fury behind them.

They ran down into the subterranean warmth of the subway, the smell of grease, ozone, and wet garbage hitting their senses. The station was mostly deserted at this hour of the night. A train was sitting at the platform, its doors about to close.

"Get in!" Richard gasped, throwing himself and the children through the closing rubber doors just as Marcus and his men descended the stairs.

The doors chimed and slid shut. The train began to move, pulling away into the dark tunnels of the city.

Richard collapsed onto the dirty orange seats of the subway car, his chest heaving. He looked down at Sophia. She was shivering, but the incubator’s battery was still holding. Tommy sat next to him, his small hands trembling as he stared at his bare, dirty feet.

Richard reached into his pocket and pulled out the red wooden toy train. He broke it open completely, extracting the military-grade flash drive.

He then pulled out his personal tablet, which was connected to a secure, independent cellular network. He plugged the drive into the adapter.

A prompt flashed on the screen:

Richard looked at Tommy. "Tommy. I need the song. All of it."

Tommy swallowed hard, looking at the screen. He began to sing, his voice carrying a haunting echo in the empty subway car:

Richard’s fingers flew across the screen, entering the prime numbers in sequence:

2... 3... 5... 7... 11... 13

The screen flashed green. As the document loaded, Richard’s eyes scanned the pages of data. What he saw made him feel physically sick. It wasn’t just illegal clinical trials.

Evans Enterprises had been partnering with international syndicates to test experimental neurological drugs on children—specifically, orphans and homeless youth. Elena had discovered that the company was using its charitable foundations as a front to kidnap these children.

And at the very bottom of the primary authorization list, dated fifteen years ago, was a signature.

It wasn't Julian’s.

It was Richard Evans’ father, Charles Evans.

And beneath Charles Evans' signature was a note:

Project Lazarus is the true foundation of the Evans fortune. If my son Richard ever discovers this, he must be eliminated. Julian Vance is authorized to take full control of the estate.

Richard stared at the screen, his world shattered. His entire life—his wealth, his privilege, his empire—was built on the blood of innocent children. He had been groomed from birth to be the perfect, clueless front-man, destined to take the fall when the truth eventually came out.

"Richard?" Tommy whispered, looking at him with wide, frightened eyes. "Are you okay?"

Before Richard could answer, the subway train suddenly screeched to a violent halt inside the dark tunnel. The lights flickered and died.

Over the emergency PA system, a cold, familiar voice echoed:

"End of the line, Richard. Hand over the children, or I derail the entire train."
