CHAPTER 4: The Price of Silence

The darkness inside the subway tunnel was absolute, broken only by the dim red emergency lights of the car. The passengers—a few late-night commuters scattered throughout the train—began to panic, whispering and shouting in confusion.
"Stay down," Richard hissed to Tommy, pushing him and Sophia’s incubator under the metal seats.
He crept toward the front of the train cabin. Through the glass door of the conductor's booth, he could see the driver slumped over the controls, unconscious but alive. Outside, on the narrow concrete catwalk of the subway tunnel, three figures were approaching, their flashlight beams cutting through the gloom like searchlights.
Julian was leading them.
"I know you can hear me, Richard!" Julian’s voice echoed through the tunnel, amplified by a megaphone. "You think you're a hero now? You're a fraud! Every dollar you've donated, every hospital wing you've built, was paid for by the children we experimented on! You are just as guilty as I am!"
Richard felt the heavy weight of the gun in his hand. Julian was right. Ignorance was no excuse. He had allowed himself to be blinded by his own vanity. But he could end it tonight.
He turned back to Tommy. "Tommy, listen to me very carefully. If I don't make it out of here, I need you to take this tablet. The files are already decrypted. If you get to a Wi-Fi network, they will automatically upload to every major news outlet in the world. Do you understand?"
Tommy shook his head, tears streaming down his face. "No! You promised! You said you wouldn't leave us!"
"I’m not leaving you, buddy," Richard said, a soft, rare smile breaking through his rugged, battle-worn face. "I'm just going to buy you some time."
Richard stood up, stepped out of the subway car's emergency door, and walked onto the catwalk of the tunnel.
"Julian!" Richard shouted, holding the flash drive high above his head. "I have the ledger! You want it? Come and get it!"
Julian stopped, a cruel smile spreading across his face. "Ah, the great Richard Evans. Finally playing the martyr. Toss the drive over, and maybe I’ll let the kids live."
"You’re lying," Richard said, stepping forward, his gun pointed at Julian's chest. "You can't let any of us live. Not after what we know."
"You're right," Julian chuckled. "But at least if you cooperate, their deaths will be quick."
Suddenly, the flashlight beams shifted.
One of the mercenaries pointed his light toward the subway car behind Richard.
Through the window, Tommy was trying to drag Sophia’s incubator out of the door to follow Richard.
"Target sighted," the mercenary grunted, raising his rifle.
"No!" Richard screamed.
He fired his gun, hitting the mercenary in the chest. At the same moment, Marcus fired from behind Julian.
A bullet tore through Richard's shoulder. The force of the impact spun him around, and he fell off the catwalk, crashing onto the dirty, electrified third rail of the subway tracks.
Fortunately, the power to the rail had been cut when the train stopped, but the fall was brutal. Richard lay in the dirt, gasping for air, his left arm completely useless.
Julian walked to the edge of the catwalk, looking down at him with supreme contempt. "You were always weak, Richard. Your father knew it. That's why he chose me to run the real business."
Julian signaled to Marcus. "Go get the kids. And the tablet."
Marcus nodded and stepped toward the subway car.
But as Marcus reached for the door, the emergency door of the adjacent tunnel burst open.
A flood of heavily armed police tactical units, sirens blaring from the street-level grates above, poured into the tunnel.
"POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! NOW!"
Julian’s face went pale. "What? How did they find us?!"
Richard, bleeding on the tracks, let out a weak laugh. "Did you really think I didn’t have a backup plan, Julian? When I unlocked the drive, it didn't just decrypt the files. It sent an automatic, high-priority distress signal with our exact GPS coordinates to the FBI's counter-terrorism unit."
"You bastard!" Julian screamed, raising his gun to shoot Richard.
But before he could pull the trigger, a sniper round from the tactical team shattered the concrete next to his head.
"Drop the weapon, Vance! It’s over!"
Marcus immediately threw his gun down, raising his hands. Julian, realizing he was cornered, looked at the flash drive in his hand, then at the police. With a desperate growl, he turned and ran deeper into the dark, labyrinthine tunnels of the subway system.
"Secure the children!" the tactical commander shouted as officers swarmed the platform.
Richard felt his vision fading. The blood loss from his shoulder was turning his world into a gray haze.
May you like
The last thing he saw before darkness took him was Tommy, running toward him, crying, holding Sophia tightly in his arms.
"Richard! Stay awake! Please, don't leave us!"
