Chapter 4 - Into the Lion's Den

"They’re coming up," Dr. Aris said, his voice tight with panic as the security cameras in the hallway showed the elevator ascending.
"Get Emma," Jonathan commanded, his mind shifting into high-stakes crisis mode. "There is a service elevator behind the pantry that leads to the underground garage. Take my private unmarked sedan. Go to my cabin in upstate New York. Don't use any highways. Use the back roads."
"What about you, Jonathan?"
"I have to stay," Jonathan said, his eyes darkening. "If I run, it proves their narrative. I need to buy you time to get her out of the city. Take her backpack. Keep that diary safe."
Jonathan walked back into the kitchen. Emma was standing by the counter, holding her backpack, her eyes wide with terror as she heard the distant heavy footsteps in the hallway.
"They're coming for me, aren't they?" she whispered.
Jonathan knelt down so he was at eye level with her. He placed his hands on her small shoulders. "Emma, listen to me. You are going with Dr. Aris. He is going to take you to a safe place. I promise you, I will not let them hurt you. Do you trust me?"
Emma looked into his eyes, searching for any sign of hesitation. She found none. She nodded quickly, wiping a tear from her eye. "Yes, Daddy."
Jonathan’s heart swelled with a strange, fierce protective instinct. She wasn't his biological daughter, but in that moment, it didn't matter. She was Sarah's child, and she was his daughter in every way that counted.
"Go," Jonathan said to Aris.
The doctor grabbed Emma’s hand and disappeared through the pantry door just as the front doors of the penthouse were violently forced open.
Four armed police officers entered, weapons drawn, followed by two suit-clad agents and Michael Reynolds.
"Hands where I can see them, Jonathan!" one of the officers shouted.
Jonathan stood calmly in the center of his living room, his hands raised to his shoulders. "Is there a problem, officer?"
Michael stepped forward, a look of smug victory plastered across his face. "Where is the girl, Jonathan? We know you brought her here. Don't make this more difficult than it already is."
"I don't know what you're talking about," Jonathan said smoothly. "I had dinner, I came home. I am alone."
The agents immediately began searching the penthouse. Michael walked up to Jonathan, leaning in close so only he could hear.
"You think you're so smart, Jonathan," Michael whispered, his eyes gleaming with malice. "But you're done. The board has already voted. You are officially suspended. And once we find that brat, she’ll be placed in a state facility where she’ll never see the light of day. Her mother tried to ruin me, and now her little bastard is going to finish the job? I don't think so."
"She's your daughter, Michael," Jonathan said, his voice a low, dangerous whisper.
Michael’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, his eyes narrowing. "She's an inconvenience. And so are you."
"Sir, the apartment is empty," one of the officers called out from the back. "There is a service elevator in the kitchen. It’s been activated."
The lead officer turned to Jonathan, pulling out a pair of handcuffs. "Jonathan Miller, you are under arrest for obstruction of justice and suspicion of child endangerment. You have the right to remain silent..."

As the cold steel wrapped around his wrists, Jonathan looked at Michael. Michael was smiling, but Jonathan felt a sudden, calm certainty.
Michael had just made his final, fatal mistake.
