Chapter 5 - The Corporate Execution

The holding cell at the precinct was cold, but Jonathan’s mind was white-hot with strategy. He had spent his entire life analyzing complex systems to find their single point of failure.

Michael Reynolds was that failure.

By morning, Jonathan’s high-priced defense attorney, Arthur Vance, had secured his release on a massive bail. The media outside the courthouse was a feeding frenzy, but Jonathan bypassed them entirely, entering a waiting town car.

"Where to, Mr. Miller?" the driver asked.

"The TechVision Headquarters," Jonathan said. "The annual shareholder meeting is at ten o'clock. Michael is planning to finalize his takeover."

"But sir, your suspension—"

"Just drive," Jonathan said.

In the back seat, Jonathan opened his laptop. He had received an encrypted email from Dr. Aris. They had reached the cabin safely, and Aris had managed to scan and upload the contents of Sarah's diary.

Jonathan scrolled through the digitized pages. His eyes filled with tears as he read Sarah’s words. She had loved him until her last breath. She had written about how Michael, then a junior analyst at Jonathan’s startup, had discovered she was pregnant. Michael, terrified that Jonathan’s focus would be split by a family and destroy the company’s valuation, had threatened to expose Sarah's troubled family past to the press and ruin Jonathan’s funding.

But there was an even darker revelation.

Michael had forced himself on Sarah before she fled. Emma was the result of that horrific night. Sarah had kept Emma hidden, raising her in poverty, terrified that Michael would find out his biological child existed and use her as a pawn—or worse, eliminate her to protect his pristine corporate reputation.

“If Michael ever finds her,” Sarah had written in her final entry, “he will destroy her. He has a secret offshore account where he has been funneling TechVision's research funds for years. I have the account numbers. I have the transaction receipts. I hid them in the lining of Emma's backpack.”

Jonathan’s hands shook. He immediately called Dr. Aris.

"Aris! Search the lining of Emma's backpack. There are documents—"

"Jonathan," Aris’s voice was frantic, interrupted by the sound of static and wind. "They found us. Marcus... he's here. He has men. They’ve blocked the road. We are trying to escape through the woods—"

A loud crash echoed through the phone, followed by Emma’s scream.

"Daddy! Help!"

The call went dead.

Jonathan’s blood ran cold. He slammed his laptop shut. "Driver! Run every red light. Get me to the office now!"
